KENT, Ohio – The Kent State field hockey team (2-1, 0-0 MAC) defeated #22 Ohio State this afternoon by a score of 3-1 at Murphy-Mellis Field. The Flashes scored three unanswered goals to secure the victory.   

After a first quarter that was dominated by defense, Ohio State took the lead on a penalty shot at the 21:10 minute mark in the second quarter. Kent State would even it back up five minutes later with a goal by senior Luisa Knapp. The teams would go into halftime tied 1-1.

The Flashes came out determined in the third quarter to grab control of the game and did just that. Sophomore Jenna McCrudden scored for the Flashes to take a 2-1 lead and senior Ashley Bonetz struck again just 51 seconds later off a penalty corner to go up 3-1. Knapp and junior Maria Cambra Soler had the assists on the corner. Neither team scored in the fourth and final period.

Kent State led in total shots (12-10) and shots on goal (9-6), while the two teams tied in penalty corners (3-3). Fifth year goalkeeper Azure Fernsler had five saves on the day for Kent.

Kent State will face off again on Saturday, Sept. 4 against #14 Syracuse in Syracuse, N.Y. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
