Kent State Claims 2021 Jacoby Trophy

Cleveland, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference has announced that Kent State has earned the Jacoby Trophy as the top women's athletic program during the 2020-21 academic year. This marks the 10th time in program history and the first time since 2016 that the Golden Flashes have secured the prestigious all-sports award.

Kent State competed in 11 women’s sports and during the 2020-21 academic year won the track & field outdoor championship for the eighth time in program history as well as its 22nd consecutive women’s golf title.

In field hockey, the Golden Flashes finished as MAC runner-up after posting an 11-3 record. The Golden Flashes ended the season with three weekend sweeps in a row, winning their last six games.

Kent State’s softball program placed third (27-26, 23-16 MAC) in the MAC standings and have posted eight consecutive top-four finishes, which is a streak that is six seasons longer than any other school.

Gymnastics placed third at the MAC Championships and competed in the NCAA Morgantown Regional, while the lacrosse program tied for third during the Conference’s inaugural season and posted a program record five wins.

Basketball (fifth), volleyball (fifth) and indoor track and field (sixth) also finished in the top half of the MAC.

For the Jacoby Trophy, points are awarded based on each school’s finish, with the overall total divided by the number of sports sponsored by each school. The women’s trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner Fred Jacoby.  Jacoby was the MAC Commissioner from 1971-82 and is credited with incorporating women’s athletics into the conference structure.
