CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A vigorous game of offense from both teams brought the Miami University field hockey squad into overtime with the Stanford Cardinal, but a penalty corner in the overtime period proved to be the difference-maker as the RedHawks fell, 5-4, in the NCAA first round on Friday afternoon to close out its spring 2021 season.
The first half was mostly even between Stanford and Miami as the RedHawks edged the Cardinal 4-to-1 in shots, and both teams had a goal apiece. Stanford had a two-goal second frame, which gave them the 3-1 lead to close the first half of action. The RedHawks bounced back in the second half with goals from Lexie Nugent and Madison Workman along with the last-minute goal from Jenna Kirby that brought the close matchup into overtime. Sophomore Isabelle Perese was outstanding in net for the Red and White, saving seven shots from the Cardinal to keep the RedHawks close with Stanford.
