MAC Announces Field Hockey Players of the Week

MAC Defensive Player of the Week
Luli Rosso, Miami
Midfield, Sophomore, Mendoza, Argentina (Univ. Nacional de Argentina)

Rosso’s play in the midfield helped create advantages of 41-8 in shots and 14-3 on corners, powering the RedHawks to two wins over MAC-rival Kent State. Miami won both games by an aggregate score of 7-2.

MAC Offensive Player of the Week
Allie Grace Joyner, Miami
Midfield/Striker, Senior, Louisville, Ky. (Christian Academy of Louisville)

Joyner scored four of Miami’s seven goals on the weekend, including three in the 4-2 win over Kent State. She scored one goal in the opening game of the weekend before notching a hat trick in the second game.

Other Nominees

Jenna McKune, Ball State
MF, Senior, Louisville, Ky. (Assumption)

Jenna McKune helped the Cardinals sweep the weekend's series against Bellarmine including a 2-1 overtime win on Friday and a 3-1 victory over the Knights on Saturday, extending BSU's win streak to three. With the help of McKune she was able to break down play in the midfield while intercepting passes and generating Ball State's counter attack. McKune help hold Bellarmine to record low corners with only one on Saturday and four on Friday. She prevented entry into our defensive circle.

Azure Fernsler, Kent State University
Goalkeeper, Senior, Sinking Spring, PA. (Wilson)

Senior goalkeeper Azure Fernsler had her hands full this past weekend as Kent State battled Miami. Over the course of both games, Fernsler faced 41 total shots, 28 of them being on goal, and faced 14 penalty corners. However, even with the onslaught of Miami’s offense, she only allowed 7 goals combined and made 21 saves on the weekend. Her play was a major reason for why the Flashes stayed competitive in both games.

Macy Lotze, Ohio
Goalkeeper, Freshman, Louisville, Ky. / Eastern

Freshman keeper Macy Lotze got her first career start this week, helping the Bobcats in their Saturday matchup with App State, where they played with only 10 athletes. Lotze was stellar, allowing only two goals in 60 minutes while making 10 eight saves and facing 13 total shots, with 10 of them on goal.

Addie Clark, App State
GK, Sophomore, Louisville, KY (Dupont Manual)

Addie Clark was credited with a season-high seven saves Friday, and her one-on-one diving save at the 58 minute mark preserved the 2-1 App State win over Ohio. She faced a total of 16 shot attempts, saved 10 and allowed no goals in the road sweep of the Bobcats. Clark also posted her second shutout of the season in Saturday's 2-0 win. Saturday's win marked the first conference series sweep of the season for the Black and Gold, and the second time App State has won back-to-back contests in 2021.

Emma Hilton, Ball State
MF, Freshman, CLARK, N.J. ARTHUR L JOHNSON HIGH SCHOOL

The true freshman has created stellar opportunities all season, missing the goal by inches many times (or having spectacular defensive saves curtail her finding the goal). This weekend Hilton generated corners and shot a team-high 10 shots over the two games. She also scored her first career goal as a Cardinal. Hilton helped Ball State sweep the two-game series over Bellarmine this weekend while also extended BSU's win streak to three.

Meghan Smart, App State
Midfield/Forward, Senior, Haddonfield, NJ (Haddonfield Memorial)

Meghan Smart facilitated Saturday's 2-0 win over Ohio and helped secure the road sweep by scoring once and recording an assist. App State put away the series dagger off the stick of Smart at the 50 minute mark in the fourth on Saturday. With that goal, Smart now leads the MAC in goals scored with six, and has accounted for 16 total points this season. Saturday's win also marked the first conference series sweep of the season for the Black and Gold, and the second time App State has won back-to-back contests in 2021.
