KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association on Wednesday announced its women's volleyball All-American teams with Western Michigan volleyball's Rachel Bontrager earning AVCA All-American Honorable Mention.
Bontrager becomes just the sixth player in school history to earn All-American honors and the first since Lise Martin back in 1987. Earlier in April Bontrager was named AVCA Midwest All-Region, just the fourth player in school history to earn all-region honors.
During her senior campaign Bontrager led the Mid-American Conference with 4.62 kills per set en route to being named MAC Player of the Year, the first for the Broncos since 2000. The senior outside hitter was also named First Team All-MAC for the third year in a row after leading the conference in points per set (5.01) and ranking ninth in hitting percentage (.319).
The Valparaiso, Ind., native this season posted double-digit kills in 22 of WMU's 23 matches including the final 20 matches. Bontrager ends her career with 1,656 kills, the second most in school history to go along with 1,065 digs which is tenth most.
Bontrager is the only player in school history to have 1,600 career kills and 1,000 career digs.
Bontrager is all over the WMU record books ending her four-year career in Kalamazoo with 3.82 career kills per set, the best mark in school history. Bontrager's 4,547 attack attempts are second most in school history while her 44 double-doubles (digs & kills) is the third most in program history.
This season Bontrager registered a career-high 30 kills in a five-set victory over Buffalo on March 4. The senior outside hitter became the first player since 2005 to eclipse 30 kills in a match.
