LEXINGTON, Ky. - A series split with Arizona and a series win over Kentucky. The Ball State baseball team collected another big win on Sunday, outlasting Kentucky 4-3 to take two of three over the weekend.
The Cards (6-4) struck with a four-run 6th inning and dominant pitching by winner Lukas Jaksich and John Baker did the rest. Jaksich pitched 5.0 innings of one-run ball before Baker took over in the 6th.
"We continued to show grit in winning the series against a really strong SEC opponent in Kentucky," head coach Rich Maloney said. "A lot of players contributed behind standout pitching from Luke and Johnny Baker. These were two excellent team wins for our program."
With Kentucky leading 1-0, BSU got a walk and two batters hit by a pitch to start a rally. Chase Sebby had an RBI HBP and Nick Powell drove in a run with a walk. Ryan Peltier then delivered a two-run single to put the exclamation point on the four-run inning. Kentucky scored two runs late to make it interesting but ran out of chances against Baker, who earned the four-inning save and has a 1.45 ERA on the year.
Maloney also mentioned the stellar defense at shortstop by Justin Conant, who with Noah Navarro turned two double plays early in the game.
