MAC Volleyball All-MAC Teams, Specialty Awards Announced

Cleveland, Ohio - Today the Mid-American Conference announced the All-MAC Teams & Specialty Award selections for the 2020-21 volleyball season. All of the awards were voted on by the league's 12 head coaches.

Western Michigan's Rachel Bontrager was named the MAC Player of the Year, while Bowling Green Head Coach Daanijela Tomic earned Coach of the Year accolades. WMU's Logan Case was named the Freshman of the Year, while Case and BGSU's Hanna Laube shared Co-Setter of the Year honors. Akron's Taylor Sharrits was named Defensive Player of the Year and rounded out this year's specialty award selections.

Tomic and the Falcons (20-1) captured the MAC Regular Season Championship for the third time in the last four seasons, gaining the first seed in the MAC Tournament as well as hosting rights for the tournament. Tomic and the Falcons began the season with an 18-match win streak that set the record for most wins to begin a season in BGSU Athletic department history in addition to breaking the program record for most consecutive wins. For Tomic, this is her second time being the MAC Coach of the Year after being named in 2017 as well.

Bontrager becomes the ninth player in school history and first since Zakiya Pope back in 2000 to earn MAC Player of the Year honors. Bontrager was also named First Team All-MAC for the third year in a row after leading the conference and ranking sixth in the NCAA with 344 kills. Bontrager's 4.59 kills per set ranks first in the MAC and 12th in the nation. Bontrager ended the regular season having recorded 18 straight matches with double-digit kills and had double-digit kills in 20 of the 21 matches this season. Bontrager's .324 hitting percentage in 21 matches this season was the ninth best mark in the MAC while her nine double-doubles led the Broncos.

Case ended the regular season leading the MAC and the NCAA with 12.16 assists per set. Case's 12.16 assists per set is the eighth best mark in a single-season in school history.  The freshman setter also led the conference and ranked second nationally with 912 total assists. The Maineville, Ohio native ranked second on the Broncos this season with six double-doubles and had eight matches this season with at least 50 assists. Case had double-digit assists in every match this season and had over 40 assists in 14 of the 21 matches. Case's 59 assists in a win over Eastern Michigan on Feb. 5, was the fifth highest total in the MAC this season.

Laube is the first Falcon in program history to be named the MAC Setter of the Year. The recognitions come after Laube logged 11.40 assists per set, the 12th best mark in the nation, and was named the MAC East Setter of the Week four times over the course of the season. Laube also paced Bowling Green's attack to a .246 hitting percentage as well as multiple MAC East Offensive Player of the Week awards. This is Laube's first All-MAC recognition.

In 90 sets played this season (22 matches), She anchored the Zips' defense with a career-high 535 total digs and 5.94 digs per set. Sharrits currently ranks No. 1 in the NCAA in total digs and No. 5 in the nation in digs per set. Sharrits led the MAC in both categories and rewrote Akron's record book in digs and digs per set, moving to eighth all-time in single-season dig performances, while claiming the best single-season digs per set performance in program history, replacing Lori Snider's mark of 5.41 digs per set in 2004. Sharrits registered 20 or more digs in 15 matches this season with six performances delivering 30-plus digs, including a career-best 41 digs against Toledo in the Zips' final match victory. That performance ranks third all-time at Akron, tying Sinder's 41-dig effort against Eastern Kentucky in 2004.

The semifinals of the 2020-21 MAC Volleyball Championship begins Friday, April 2 on the campus of Bowling Green State University. The championship game is slated for Saturdy night at 5:00 pm ESPN+. More information can be found on the Volleyball Championship page.
