YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Second Mid-American Conference game, second MAC win, and dominant performance to boot.

Courtney Burke scored four goals as the Central Michigan lacrosse team rolled to a 17-4 victory over Youngstown State on Friday at the Penguins' Farmers National Bank Field.

The Chippewas improved to 4-4, 2-0 MAC, putting last weekend's close nonconference losses to No. 19 Louisville and Cincinnati in the rearview mirror as they train their eyes on the quest for a league championship.

"Coming out of last weekend's losses what we really wanted to focus on was playing disciplined and playing up to our level," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "It is tough to know that we lost those games, but it is great to know that we can compete with some of the best teams in the country."

Tisdale changed up her starting lineup against the Penguins (1-2) and the move paid off as the Chippewas equaled their season high with 17 goals, set a program record with 43 shots, and finished with 32 shots on goal, tying for the second-highest total in program history.

"We shifted things up today and got some new faces out there," she said. "Sophia Chong-Ahmed just had a great game. She is new to the starting lineup and scored her first two career goals today. She went out and did the little things right, and I am really proud of her, and I know her teammates are as well."

The Chippewas came out on fire, getting a goal from Burke less than 2 minutes in and building a 5-0 lead before the game was 10 minutes old. They led 10-3 at halftime.

Nine Chippewas scored. Natalie Karlen scored three goals, all in the first half; Tyra Prince and Brennan Paddy, along with Chong-Ahmed, had two goals apiece.

Chippewa goalkeeper Sierra Savage made six saves

Central Michigan is scheduled to entertain Robert Morris in a MAC game at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex on Saturday, March 27 (1 p.m.).

Box Score

OLEAN, N.Y. - The University of Akron women's lacrosse team found itself in a back-and-forth non-conference contest with St. Bonaventure (2-2) on Saturday, March 20, before the Bonnies escaped a strong second-half effort by the Zips (3-4) to earn a 13-12 triumph.

"In our fourth game with a one-goal difference this season, the girls were able to hold it together and show amazing grit and determination," Akron head coach Christy Mitchell commented. "Although we didn't clinch this one, the game is a reflection of our growth that will translate into more wins as we keep on developing."

Freshmen Noelle Boyd (Murrysville, Pa.), Madeline Shewbridge (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Anjali Silverheels (Hamburg, N.Y.) each registered a pair of goals to highlight Akron's offensive performances on the afternoon.
