Buffalo: The University at Buffalo men's basketball team needed overtime, but was able to get past third-seeded Akron, 81-74, in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Friday night. The Bulls outscored Akron, 13-6, in overtime to earn their fifth trip to the MAC title game in the last six years. The Bulls will face Ohio in the MAC title game tomorrow night. Jeenathan Williams scored seven of his team-high 26 points in the overtime session to help the Bulls pull away. The junior forward hit a three-pointer from the elbow to cap a 7-0 scoring run to start overtime and UB never looked back.
Ohio: For the first time since 2013, the Ohio men's basketball team (15-7) is headed to the Mid-American Conference Championship game. The Bobcats upset top-seeded Toledo (21-8), 87-80, in the semifinals Friday night (March 12) inside Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. Ohio is now 7-1 all-time against Toledo in the MAC Tournament and it is the first time since the 2017 MAC Tournament Quarterfinals that Ohio has defeated the Rockets. Junior guard Jason Preston (Orlando, Fla.) led the Bobcats with 27 points, five rebounds and five assists while shooting 11-of-19 from the field and 5-of-9 from three. Preston is now five points away from 1,000 for his career. Redshirt junior forward Ben Vander Plas (Ripon, Wis.) was dominant, scoring 26 points, grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out seven assists. Junior Jason Preston currently sits at 995 career points, while senior Dwight Wilson III is also close, with 969. Preston needs five points to hit the milestone.
