TAMPA, Fla. -- MACtion is hitting Tampa with Super Bowl LV to be played this Sunday, Feb. 7th between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Noteable MAC alums are sprinkled throughout both teams rosters.
A total of 10 former student-athletes from Mid-American Conference institutions are on the rosters of the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In addition. Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich (Marshall, '02) and Kansas City running backs coach Deland McCullough (Miami, '96) will be representing the MAC from the sidelines.
This year's Super Bowl will be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, marking the first time in NFL history for a team to play in a Super Bowl hosted at their home stadium.
Central Michigan leads the MAC with four former student-athletes represented in the Super Bowl, while Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan have two each. Five MAC institutions will have at least one player represented in the Super Bowl.
Former Kent State quarterback Julian Edelman was named Super Bowl MVP in 2019. Edelman was part of the winning New England Patriots in a 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Edelman finished with a game high 10 receptions for 141 yards as the favorite target for Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. Edelman won his third Super Bowl as a member of the New England Patriots and became the first former MAC student athlete to be named an NFL Super Bowl MVP.
