Eastern Michigan and Akron On Top After Day One of MAC Indoor Track and Field Championship

Mount Pleasant, Mich. - With five events complete on both the men and women's side, Eastern Michigan and Akron respectively stand on top of the 2021 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship leader board.

In the men's weight throw, 2018 and 2019 MAC Champion Jake Wickey regained his crown, tossing a distance of 22.47 meters (73' 8¾). Wickey was followed by Eastern Michigan's Newlyn Stephenson, Taige Bryant, and Khalil Bedoui in the event. 

Akron's Hunter Garretson clinched the men’s pole vault title with a clearance of 5.43m. Teammate Hesham Eldesouky also captured a MAC title of his own on Friday, winning the men's long jump with a distance of 7.35m. 
 
Akron's Jacqueline Pokuaah picked up the women's long jump title with a leap of 6.07m . 
 
The women’s weight throw title is staying in Mount Pleasant with Quiara Wheeler, who is ranked 10th nationally. Her winning throw covered 20.59 meters.

Northern Illinois junior Ashley Tutt went on to repeat her 2019 title in the women's 5,000m with a time 17:14.00 to earn 10 points for the Huskies. 

EMU’s Chris Devaney took gold in the Men's 5000 meter, finishing in 14:17.81 which was good for a new MAC Meet record. 

The Bowling Green State University track and field team closed out day one of the MAC Championships with an impressive race in the distance medley relay, earning the program's first championship in the event.

The Eastern Michigan Eagles notched the 4000m distance medley relay title in 10:00.01 with their quartet of senior Solomon Costa, sophomore Trent Barron, senior Owen Day, and junior Baldvin Magnusson. Eastern last won the DMR in 2020, also with Costa and Day on the crew.
 
Through four events in the men’s heptathlon, Eastern Michigan's Skyler Lester leads the field with 3024 points.  

Action continues tomorrow at 10:30 AM. with the men's heptathlon 60m hurdles.
