The Race For The 2021 MAC Indoor Track & Field Championship Begins Today

Mount Pleasant, Mich. -- The 2021 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships begin today at the Jack Skoog indoor track in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The two-day championship features 12 women's programs and four men's programs.

Events will begin at 10:00 am on Friday with the 60m of the men's heptathlon along with the men's weight throw (trials & finals). The women's pentathlon follows at 4:00 pm with the 60m hurdles. A live stream will be provided on cmuchippewas.com and can be found on the MAC Championship central page

Akron
The Zips' men squad has won five of the last six indoor team titles and eight of the last 11 MAC championships overall and will be looking to capture back-to-back-to-back-to-back titles for the first time in program history.

Bowling Green
Bowling Green heads to Central Michigan to compete in the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday and Saturday. The Falcons placed fifth a year ago and will look to improve upon that finish. BGSU ranks among the top 10 in an event 17 times, led by Ryen Draper at second in the 200. Zaresha Neal (shot put), Kailee Perry (3000), Iyanna Ross (400) and Savannah Nevels (60) are all third in the MAC in their respective events.

Buffalo
This will be the Bulls first trip to Mount Pleasant since the 2015 MAC Indoor Championships where the men's team placed fourth and the women's team placed fifth. During the 2015 MAC Championships, senior Jonathan Jones set a MAC Championship and school-record toss in the shot put to pick up 10 points for the Bulls. With his second throw in the finals, a 20.06-meter heave, he rewrote his own indoor school record of 19.95-meters and his meet record of 19.59 meters.

Central Michigan
CMU Senior Quiara Wheeler leads a strong contingent of Chippewas in the women's weight throw. Wheeler earlier this season set the program record with a toss of 21.51 meters, which ranks as the top throw among MAC competitors this season and ninth in the nation.

Eastern Michigan
Last season, the women's squad took home the coveted MAC indoor title in dramatic fashion, Feb. 29, 2020, in Akron, Ohio. The Eagles found themselves in second place after the first day of competition with Northern Illinois holding the top spot. The two institutions were neck and neck late on the second day of competition, but the Green and White pulled away to defeat the Huskies, 104-102, for its fourth MAC indoor championship in six seasons.

Kent State 
The Golden Flashes have 25 athletes slated to compete, beginning with the heptathlon 60-meter dash and weight throw at 10 a.m. The 60-meter hurdles kicks off trials for running events at 11:15 a.m. Event finals for the 5,000-meter run and distance medley relay will bring Friday's men's action on the track to a close at 12:45 p.m. and 1:15 p.m., respectively.

Miami
Miami returns to the track on February 26 for the MAC Indoor Track Championships, held at Central Michigan. Sean Torpy was a crucial part of the Miami Men's DMR squad that competed at the Camel City Invite, which grabbed the top time at the meet. With a time of 9:37.07 (converted to 9:29.34 due to track size), the RedHawks finished in a time that is currently third in the country in the event, and the top-time in the Mid-American Conference.

Northern Illinois
Last season, NIU recorded its best finish at the MAC Indoor Championships as it finished in second place with 102 points, just two points behind conference champion Eastern Michigan. Junior Ashley Tutt (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) returns as the defending conference champion in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters and is ranked first in both events this season. Tutt ran a school-record time of 16:01.26 at the Iowa State Classic (Feb. 12) in the 5,000, which ranks 15th nationally in the event, and her time of 9:31.86 at the GVSU Mike Lints Alumni Open (Jan. 23) is also a conference-best and ranks in the top-60 nationally.

Ohio
Senior Abby Moore (Rootstown, Ohio) headlines the competition for the Bobcats. Moore took second in the weight throw at the 2020 MAC Indoor Championships. She closed out the 2021 regular season with three-straight victories in the event, most recently placing first with a season-best toss of 18.25 meters last Saturday (February 20) at the Kent State Tune-Up.

Toledo 
Junior Semra Karaslan is a Toledo favorite to do well in the 3000m race. Karaslan had an impressive third-place finish this year at the Darius Dixon Invitational with a time of 9:35.03. Also competing in the 3000m race are sophomore sisters Emily Vining and Madeline Vining. Emily finished first in the 3000m race followed by Madeline in second at the CMU Invitational with personal-best times of 10:02.27 and 10:05.31, respectively. All three women will also be competing in the distance medley relay, where they are expected to perform well.

Western Michigan
The Western Michigan track and field team heads to Central Michigan University and the 2021 Indoor Mid-American Conference Championships, taking place on Friday and Saturday at CMU's Indoor Athletic Complex. The Broncos have qualified in seven individual events, as well as the distance medley and 4x400-meter relays. Nine athletes will compete in the seven individual events. WMU looks to push its momentum into the weekend. The Broncos were recently off but last competed at the GVSU Big Meet, posting several new personal bests.
