MAC Announces Final 2021 Indoor Track and Field Weekly Awards

Men's Track Athlete of the Week
Sean Torpy, Miami
Senior, Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg


Senior Sean Torpy was a crucial part of the Miami Men's DMR squad that competed at the Camel City Invite, which grabbed the top time at the meet. With a time of 9:37.07 (converted to 9:29.34 due to track size), the RedHawks finished in a time that is currently third in the country in the event, and the top time in the Mid-American Conference. Torpy anchored the relay, with an individual time of 4:02.293 to finish strong for Miami. Individually, Torpy competed in the men's 800-meter race, finishing in seventh with a time of 1:52.71.
 
Men's Field Athlete of the Week 
Nuh Andu, Akron
Junior, Doha, Qatar


?Akron junior Nuh Andu won the men's high jump on the strength of a career-best clearance of 7-1.75 (2.18m) at the Al Campbell Invitational on Friday, Feb. 19. The effort marked the No. 9 mark in the NCAA this season and equaled the third-best performance in indoor program history. He cleared the bar at 1.95m, 2.00m, 2.05m, 2.10m and 2.16m on his opening runs at the heights before clearing 2.18m on his second attempt. He was unsuccessful at extending his career-best mark to 7-3 (2.21m).  

Women's Track Athlete of the Week 
Kyra Keurentjes, Akron
Junior, Wehl, The Netherlands


Akron junior Kyra Keurentjes added a career-best time of 2:09.20 to edge the field in the women's 800 meters at the Al Campbell Invitational on Friday, Feb. 19. Her effort marks the top-time in the MAC this season.

Women's Field Athlete of the Week 
Leah Pasqualetti, Kent State
Freshman, Buffalo, N.Y./Orchard Park


Leah Pasqualetti broke the Kent State indoor pole vault record with a height of 4.28m (14’-0.5”) on Saturday at the Kent State Tune-Up. Pasqualetti was the No. 2 women’s pole vault performer in the country for the week of February 16-22 and is now No. 14 on the national performance list for the season.
 
Other Men's Nominees

?Jake Wickey, Kent State 
Senior, Medina, Ohio/Medina


Jake Wickey won the weight throw Saturday at the Kent State Tune-Up with a mark of 22.02m (72’-3”). Wickey was the No. 2 men’s weight throw performer in the country for the week of February 16-22 and had four of the top 10 throws overall. The senior won his fourth straight weight throw competition and all six of his attempts traveled 21.29m or further.

Ryan Smith, Miami
Sophomore, Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller


Sophomore Ryan Smith had a strong showing at the Kent State Tune-Up on Saturday, finishing the fourth in the shot put, clearing a distance of 16.02 meters. Smith's distance in the weight throw of 17.09 meters was good enough for fifth place, and the tenth-best time in the Mid-American Conference so far this season.

Jonathan Surdej, Buffalo
Sophomore, Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster


Jonathan Surdej won the shot put at the Kent State Tune-Up with a personal-best distance of 55'-03.75" (16.86-meters). His distance moves him to third in the MAC.

David Wolanin, Buffalo
Senior, Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster


David Wolanin placed fourth at the Kent State Tune-Up in the 200-meter dash setting a season's best time of 21.96 seconds. His mark ranks eighth in the MAC. 

Amir Willis, Akron
Jr, Cincinnati, Ohio


Akron junior Amir Willis won the men's 200 meters at the Al Campbell Invitational on Friday, Feb. 19, in a time of 21.23. He owns to two-fastest times in the event this season in the MAC, also running a career-best time of 21.14 at the Akron Invitational.

Other Women's Nominees

Elise Walker, Miami
Senior, Camden, Ohio/Preble Shawnee


Elise Walker had a bright showing on the field events for Miami at the Kent State Tune-Up, clearing 1.67 meters in the high jump to finish in second against a field of other MAC foes. Walker's distance is currently fifth in the Mid-American Conference, and a new personal best.

Kaylah Britt, Buffalo
Sophomore, Mastic Beach, N.Y. / William Floyd


Kaylah Britt jumped a personal-best mark of 40'-07.75" (12.39-meters) in the triple jump to win the event at the Kent State Tune-Up. She ranks first in the MAC by over a foot and is 58th in the NCAA.

Abby Moore, Ohio
Senior, Rootstown, Ohio


Senior Abby Moore (Rootstown, Ohio) earned her third-straight victory in the weight throw, as the Ohio track and field team wrapped up the regular season at the Kent State Tune-Up last Saturday (February 20) at the Kent State Field House. Moore once again won the weight throw, this time with a season-best distance of 18.25 meters. She also turned in a top-five performance in the shot put again, registering a toss of 14.51 meters and a fourth-place finish. 

Fegor Clifford, Akron
Freshman, Delta State, NIgeria


Akron freshman Fegor Clifford recorded a career-best mark of 39-4.50 (12.00m) to win the women's triple jump at the Al Campbell Invitational on Friday, Feb. 19. Additionally, she also finished second in the women's long jump with a career-long jump of 18-5 (5.61m).

?Emily Akin, Miami
Junior, Hudson, Ohio/Hudson


Junior Emily Akin had a great performance on the track for the RedHawks on Saturday at Kent State, grabbing the runner up title in the 800-meter event, and then following up with an individual title in the mile race, with a time of 4:52.84. Akin's time in the mile is sixth in the MAC.

Priscilla Faa, Buffalo
Senior, Lamaica, N.Y. / John Bowne


Priscilla Faa won the 60-meter dash at the Kent State Tune-Up tying her personal-best time of 7.75 seconds. Her time ranks 12th in the MAC. She then won the 200-meter dash setting a personal-best mark of 25.10 seconds, good for 13th in the MAC.

Savannah Nevels, Bowling Green
Senior, Streetsboro, Ohio / Streetsboro


Savannah Nevels set a season-best in the 200, running the distance in 24.68 seconds at the Al Campbell Invitational Friday, hosting by the University of Akron. Nevels, who placed fourth in the 200 at last year's MAC Indoor Championships, ran in her final event of the 2021 indoor regular season.

Ivy McKee, Ball State
Senior, Columbus, Ohio / Gahanna Lincoln


Ivy McKee was first place in both the 60m and 200m at the Ball State Tune-Up on Thursday.
