Western Michigan Sweeps Men's Tennis Awards

Men's Tennis Singles Player of the Week
Brogan Pierce, Western Michigan 
Freshman, Batavia, Ill. 


Pierce went 2-0 after competing in 2 of WMU's 3 matches last week. He opened the week with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Pedro Alverez of Chicago State at No. 6 as the Broncos beat CSU 7-0. He was also slotted at No. 6 against in WMU's loss at Notre Dame, defeating Andrew Mariados 6-7, 6-2, 1-0. With his two wins Pierce improved to 7-0 in singles play on the season. 

Men's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week 
Joaquin Caballer, Western Michigan, Freshman, Dominican Republic
Peter Kuszynski, Western Michigan, Junior, Markham, Ontario


The duo of Caballer and Kuszynski went 3-0 in doubles play last week for the Broncos. The pair opened up with a 6-4 win at No. 3 against Chicago State in WMU's 7-0 win. They moved up to No. 2 against Illinois-Chicago and won 6-2 and WMU's win over UIC. On Saturday they clinched the doubles point for the Broncos at No. 3 against Notre Dame, winning 6-4. The duo is 5-1 on the season and have won their last five doubles matches.

Junior Thibault de Negri helped the Cardinals to a 7-0 sweep Friday over Eastern Illinois. de Negril picked up the game-winning clincher after finishing off the Panthers Daniel Hernandez on court one in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. de Negri win allowed Ball State to extend its win streak five and improve its overall record to 5-1. 

Krzysztof Wetoszka, Toledo

Krzysztof Wetoszka cruised to a win on the No. 3 court on Friday against Northwestern Ohio, defeating his opponent 6-0, 6-0. This marks the second straight week that Wetoszka has won his singles match without dropping a game.

Valdemar Holm, Buffalo
Senior, Malmo, Sweden


Senior Valdemar Holm began his season in style on Saturday afternoon as the Malmo, Sweden native did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Jordi Garcia of St. Francis (PA). The easy victory from Holm helped the Bulls claim a 7-0 win over the Red Flash.

The Bulls won all three matches in doubles on Saturday, highlighted by their victory at second doubles as junior Simon Wibler and senior Bjoern Petersen came away with a 6-2 victory over Christian Banti and Daniel Vinces of St. Francis (PA). The victory helped the Bulls to a 7-0 win over the Red Flash.

Ball State's No. 1 doubles dynamic duo of Chris Adams and Vince Orlando clinched the doubles point against the Eastern Illinois Panthers on Friday after Adams sealed the victory with a service ace for match point. The twosome locked up doubles point after defeating the Panthers Charles Courteau and Daniel Hernandez. Adams and Orlando allowed BSU to take the early 1-0 edge allowing the Cardinals to eventually win the match, 7-0. The doubles tandem also helped Ball State to extend its win streak to five and improve its overall record to 5-1.

Cole Shoults and Krzysztof Wetoszka moved to 2-0 on the season when playing on the top doubles court after winning against Northwestern Ohio on Friday, 6-3. These two have helped Toledo start its season 2-0; the Rockets have won both matches 7-0.
