CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Payton Gottshall was nothing short of dominant in downtown Cleveland on Friday afternoon (Feb. 12). The Bowling Green State University redshirt freshman fired a complete-game one-hit shutout, striking out a school-record 20 hitters as the Falcons downed Cleveland State University, 3-0, at the Krenzler Dome.
The Vikings salvaged a split of the doubleheader with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.
Evelyn Loyola provided all of the run support Gottshall would need in the opener, with a two-out, three-run homer in the third inning.
On the day, Loyola hit .750 with an .857 on-base percentage. She was 3-for-4 with three walks.
Sarah Gonzalez drove in BG's lone run in the nightcap, with a fourth-inning single that scored Nikki Sorgi. Sorgi scored a run in each game.
True freshman Harlie Vannatter took the loss in the circle in game two. She allowed only one earned run and five hits in her collegiate debut, walking just one batter while striking out eight.

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Western Michigan softball team used four homers to power past DePaul, 9-3, in its season opener on Friday evening in suburban Chicago. The Broncos then dropped an 8-0 decision to Kansas City to cap opening day with a split.
Game one saw WMU get homers from Sydney Stefanick, Mackenzie Swinehart, Courtney Farrish and Alyssa Kramer. Autumn Godwin picked up the victory in the circle after Stefanick started the game, allowing three runs in three innings.
Kansas City took advantage of three WMU errors to plate six unearned runs in an 8-0 Roos victory (five innings). Stefanick had a pair of hits in the effort.
