WMU's Opitz Highlights Men's Tennis Weekly Awards

Men's Tennis Singles Player of the Week
Jannik Opitz, Western Michigan

Opitz improved to 4-0 in singles play after defeating Vito Tonejc at No. 1 on Sunday as the Broncos improved to 5-0 on the season after defeating DePaul. Opitz is now on the precipice of becoming the all-time wins leader in WMU men's tennis history, needing just six more total wins to ty the mark.
  
Men's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week

Faveri and Opitz clinched the doubles point as the Broncos improved to 5-0 after a 6-1 win over DePaul on Sunday. With doubles sitting at 1-1, the duo finished off a thrilling match against Vito and Fran Tonejc, winning 7-5. The win also put Opitz five doubles wins away from tying the program doubles wins record.

A clutch performance from sophomore Vince Orlando moved the Cardinals past Xavier Friday. Orlando took control of a tight one at No. 4 singles with a late break in the only three-setter of the day. Up 4-3 and on serve in the third, the Ball State sophomore broke Xavier's Srdan Pejic at 15 with a commanding return game and then rallied from 15-30 down with three straight points to serve it out and give the Cardinals a 4-3 win. 

Bor Schweiger Muzar, NIU

Bor Schweiger Muzar won both of his singles matches playing at number one to help the Huskies improve to 5-0 on the season, its best start to a campaign since 1988-89. On Friday (Feb. 5), Muzar opened the weekend with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Creighton’s Stratton Brown, helping the Huskies to a 7-0 sweep over the Bluejays. The following day against Omaha (Feb. 6), Muzar was victorious by an identical 6-3, 6-2 scoreline against Abdoul Ouattara, helping NIU to a 4-3 win over the Mavericks. 
 
Krzysztof Wetoszka, Toledo

Krzysztof Wetoszka helped the Rockets win their first match of 2021 last Friday. Playing on the No. 3 court, the Rocket sophomore defeated his opponent from Saint Francis University in straight sets: 6-0, 6-0.  Wetoszka's win helped set the tone in a 7-0 Toledo victory in the team's first competition of the season.

The doubles tandem of senior Cole Shoults and sophomore  Krzysztof Wetoszka won their contest on the No. 1 court on Friday, 6-2, against their counterparts from Saint Francis University. The duo partnered together 18 times in 2019-20 in doubles play, going 7-7 in dual competition.
