The Cardinals opened their spring 2021 season on a high note after earning a 4-3 victory on the road at tennis powerhouse Notre Dame. The match was tied 3-3 with one competition remaining on the court. Smith, in his first collegiate match, played with confidence to take down Notre Dame's Matt Gamble in a three-set thriller 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, to seal the win for the Ball State.

This No. 1 duo of Chris Adams and Vince Orland carried over their doubles success from last year's shortened season to the year. The doubles point against Notre Dame would come down to Smith and Orlando. The twosome clinched the early 1-0 lead over the Irish after defeating Richard Ciamarra and Matt Gamble, 6-4. That doubles point became crucial in singles play has the Cardinals went on to defeat the Irish, 4-3.
