Seven Named To Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

FORT WALTON BEACH, FL — Seven student-athletes represented the MAC as the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List was announced today. A total of 114 players from college football's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) were named to the list. The number is a record for the award since it first began releasing a watch list in 2015.

Ball State's Brandon Martin, Buffalo's Max Michel, Eastern Michigan's Thomas Odukoya, Kent State's Dustin Crum, Miami's Jack Sorenson, Toledo's Bailey Flint and Western Michigan's Mike Caliendo were listed on the 2020 Watch List.

Last season, Western Michigan QB Jon Wassink was the recipient of the trophy. WMU joins Oklahoma as the only two programs in the country to have multiple winners.

The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented each February in Fort Walton Beach.  Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

One of seven Mid-American Conference student-athletes named to the list, Odukoya received Academic All-MAC honors in 2019 after appearing in all 13 games that EMU played. The Netherlands-born playmaker earned seven starts for the Eagles. He made a season-high 10-yard catch at Central Michigan (Oct. 5). Most recently, Odukoya and was named a Fourth Team All-MAC Preseason All-MAC honoree by Phil Steele's College Football Preview, July 13.
