NEW YORK – In a collective salute to the millions of essential workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, city skylines and communities across the country transformed into a beacon of blue at 8 p.m. local time on Thursday, April 9th as part of the global #LightItBlue initiative.
The Mid-American Conference participated with the support of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission with Cleveland’s iconic Terminal Tower, which is part of Cleveland's Tower City Center and the headquarters for the MAC. Also, partners the Cleveland Cavaliers and Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, which is home to the annual MAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships.
In addition, Detroit's Ford Field, which is home to the MAC's annual Football Championship Game, along with home of the NFL's Detroit Lions and annual Quick Lane Bowl game also participated.
More than 150 major sporting and entertainment venues, landmarks and historic buildings, sports, civic and arts organizations from coast to coast used existing LED technology to illuminate in blue and post LED messages of support. In a worrisome time of isolation and uncertainty, the effort aims to create a universal moment of solidarity and support.
