Kent State 9, Florida Gulf Coast 2
Boxscore
FORT MYERS, FLORIDA- Collin Romel tossed five scoreless innings and the Flashes used a balanced attack to knock off Florida Gulf Coast 9-2 on Saturday afternoon.

The Flashes scored in four-straight innings to break the game open. Kent State used the deadly combination of timely hitting and costly Gulf Coast throwing errors to jump out to the early lead.

Kent State took advantage of some Gulf Coast miscues all afternoon long, starting in the second inning. After a walk to Patrick Ferguson, a Mack Timbrook grounder and errant throw caused two Eagle defenders to collide and send the ball down the right field line. When the dust settled, Ferguson had scored, and Timbrook reached third. Kevin Dobos brought home Timbrook with a single and later scored on a Grant Vera infield hit. The Flashes racked up three runs on a trio of hits and a costly error to lead 3-0 after two.

The Flashes were after another unearned run in the third, after an error on a Ferguson groundball sent Collin Mathews to third. Kent State put on a squeeze play, but the Eagles played it to perfection, nabbing Mathews at the plate on a bang-bang play. Undeterred, the Flashes got a sacrifice fly from Eric Wentz to plate their fourth run of the game. Shoddy defense in the fourth led to two more Kent State runs as a failed pick-off move scored Justin Kirby and sent Michael Turner to third. Turner would score on a Ferguson base hit to put the Flashes up a half dozen after four. Eric Wentz single handedly made it 7-0 in the fifth. The outfielder doubled, stole third and came home on a wild pitch. Kent State added two more in the seventh on a Ben Carew run-scoring double, the redshirt junior would come into score on a sacrifice fly.

That was more than enough for Collin Romel. The southpaw got out of a two-on, one-out jam in the first and sailed through five innings. He allowed just one hit over the final four innings and struck out six in his second outing of the season.  Richie Dell worked out of trouble in both of his innings, working around two walks in the sixth and two singles in the seventh. The Flashes' defense helped out the freshman with a double play to end the sixth. Gulf Coast would score a pair of runs in garbage time, scoring runs in the eighth and the ninth to close out the scoring.

Romel moves to 1-0 on the season with the victory, the Flashes (3-3) are 2-0 in his starts. Kent State will go for the series win in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon. Righty Ryan Lane will go to the mound in the finale, first pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Boxscore
HOUSTON - For the second straight day, the Ball State baseball team got an extra-innings, game-winning hit from a senior to pick up a victory. Aaron Simpson's three-run homer in the 11th inning was the key play in BSU's 6-3 victory at Houston Baptist on Saturday.

Ball State (2-3) trailed 3-0 early but scored three times in the 4th inning to tie the score. The Cardinals' bullpen held up until the 11th when Simpson pulled a ball over the fence down the left-field line. Tyler Schweitzer was credited with the win as Ball State now is in position to earn a road sweep on Sunday.

"Our boys have shown true grit finding ways to win two close ballgames," head coach Rich Maloney said. "We got good pitching, solid defense and timely hitting to win those games. Several different guys stepped up. We've won our first series of the year and we have a chance for a sweep on Sunday."

On Friday, senior Ross Messina's extra-inning RBI hit was the difference in a 5-3 BSU win and Simpson provided the winning hit Saturday. Like Messina, another senior outfielder - Simpson made a winning play on offense in extra innings. Simpson batted in the 11th and lifted the first pitch he saw down the left-field line for a three-run homer. Zach Cole and Justin Conant - who both singled early in the inning - both scored on the play.

In both of BSU's win at HBU, relief pitching has set the stage for seniors' heroics. Since the 2nd inning of Saturday, Feb. 15, BSU relievers have combined for for 13.2 innings of one-run ball with 20 strikeouts. Zach Losey has been strong twice, working 7.0 innings and allowing just one run. Tyler Schweitzer, a freshman from Fishers, Indiana, has pitched 4.1 innings and not been charged with a run.

All of HBU's scoring came on a single swing in the bottom of the 2nd inning. HBU's Matt Solomon hit a three-run homer to break a scoreless tie but that was all the scoring Houston Baptist would manage the entire game.

Kyle Nicolas started and delivered the first quality start of the season for Ball State, pitching 6.0 innings while yielding three runs with seven strikeouts. Nicolas has a pair of no-decisions on the year, but he has a 2.45 ERA through 11 innings and 5.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
