Scali and Jascoe Named Softball Players of the Week

Sydney Jascoe, Akron

In weekend #2 of the 2020 softball season, the Akron Zips offense scored 44 runs on 59 hits and was led by redshirt junior Sydney Jascoe. The Zips third baseman recorded a .563/1.188/.650 slash line on the strength of nine hits, four walks, one double, three home runs, and totaled nine bases. Jascoe drove in 12 RBI and scored eight runs which accounted for 17 runs on the weekend. Her three home runs on the weekend bumped her season total to 6 which leads the Mid-American Conference. In the first two games of the Madeira Beach Tournament, Jascoe went a combined 5-for-9, scored five runs, three home runs, and eight RBI. Jascoe hit a weekend-best three hits against the Coyotes and tallied a weekend-best two home runs and six RBI against the Bears. Against big east opponent, Butler, to close out the weekend, Jascoe went a perfect 2-for-2, a double, RBI, and run scored.

MAC Softball Pitcher of the Week
Andrea Scali, Kent State        
Pitcher, Redshirt Sophomore, Parma, Ohio/Parma  
 
Andrea Scali dominated opposing batters at the Maverick Classic, holding them to a .070 batting average while recording 32 strikeouts. Scali tossed a one-hit shutout Sunday against host UT Arlington, which had averaged more than 10 runs in its first three games of the weekend. In her first appearance of the weekend, she had 12 punchouts during 4.2 scoreless innings of relief work to earn the victory against Texas Southern. Scali struck out the side in the seventh inning Saturday night against Texas Southern for her first save of the season.

Brenna Brownfield posted a .571/.643/.600 slash to lead the Kent State offense at the Maverick Class. Brownfield reached safely in all seven of her plate appearances on Friday, which included 3-for-3 performances against both Kansas City and Texas Southern. She led the Golden Flashes’ rally from a 5-0 deficit against the Roos, driving in a team-high three runs.
 
Alexis Dawe, Ohio      
DP, Freshman, Valley Springs, Calif. / Calaveras      
 
Freshman Alexis Dawe led the way for the Bobcats at the plate this past weekend at the 2020 Chattanooga Challenge. In the opening game against Western Kentucky, Dawe went 2-of-2 with an RBI and a walk, before going 2-for-4 with an RBI later in the day against Lipscomb. The next day against Indiana State, Dawe moved up to the two spot and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the 10-7 victory. Later in the day against Marshall, Dawe scored one run and drew two walks. Dawe concluded the weekend against Lipscomb, going 2-of-5 with an RBI in Ohio's 3-2 15-inning victory. 
 
Kira Mickelson, Northern Illinois       
C/INF, Jr., Wheatland, Wis./Westosha Central         
 
Kira Mickelson was a catalyst to the Huskie (5-5) offense and played a key role in NIU's 4-1 performance at the Residence Inn Battle at the Beach. Mickelson batted .500, going 9-for-18 from the plate, including two home runs, with seven RBIs and six runs scored. She began the weekend going 2-for3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in NIU's 8-5 win over Delaware State. In NIU's 16-15 10-inning victory over Jacksonville State, Mickelson went 4-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored. The Huskie junior wrapped up her weekend with a 2-for-4, one RBI one run scored performance in NIU's 10-2 victory in a rematch with Delaware State.
 
Kaylen Glenfield, WMU         
OF, Senior, Garden City, Mich.          
 
Senior Kaylen Glenfield was a leader at the plate this past weekend for Western Michigan. The outfielder recorded six hits off of 16 at-bats with a team-high three runs batted in. Glenfield started in all five games and recorded a .375 batting average for the weekend. She found her way around the bases three times, with one double and one stolen base added. 
 
Taylor Blevins, Bowling Green           
CF, Senior, Greensburg, Pa. (Hempfield)      
 
Bowling Green senior CF Taylor Blevins hit a team-leading .412 as the Falcons opened the season at the Chattanooga Challenge. Blevins had at least one hit in all five games, with a pair of two-hit contests. She had a double and an RBI in the season opener, a win over Tennessee Tech, and the senior had her first career triple in the next game, vs. Indiana State. Blevins, the team’s leadoff hitter, led the Falcons in on-base percentage (.444), total bases (10) and OPS (1.032) as well as batting average, and she was second on the team with three runs scored. With two extra-base hits on the weekend, she topped her total for all of last year (one) and nearly matched the total for her first three years combined (three).
 
Delanie Johnson, Ball State   
Catcher, Junior, Streator, Ill./Streator           
 
Junior Delanie Johnson led the Ball State offense with a .600 batting average over the three-day Jacksonville/UNF Classic … BSU's starting catcher in four of the five games, she logged six hits over 10 at bats, with three doubles and her first Ball State home run … She also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch twice for a team-leading .692 on base percentage.
 
Jenna Richmond, Buffalo       
UTL, Junior, Horseheads, NY / Horseheads   
 
Junior Jenna Richmond had a breakout for the Bulls as she batted .625 with a home run and four RBI on a team-best five hits while recording a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .625 on base percentage.

Other Pitcher Nominees

Holly Brehm, Ohio      

Pitcher, Freshman, Mullens, W.Va. (Whyoming East)         
 
Freshman Holly Brehm was masterful in her second career start on Feb. 16 against Lipscomb. Brehm pitched all 15 innings of the 3-2 victory, allowing two runs on 17 hits while walking three and striking out three while recording a 0.93 ERA. Brehm picked up her first career win and her first career complete game. In the game, Lipscomb only hit .274 against Brehm and only had one extra base hit, a double. 
 
Sydney Stefanick, WMU        
Pitcher, Jr., Johnstown, Ohio
 
Sydney Stefanick went the distance over the weekend at the Bruin Challenge. The junior pitched 24.1 innings over five games with an ERA of 3.74. She combined for 17 strikeouts. She also led the team offensively with a .412 batting average, starting in all five games and recording seven hits over 17 at-bats, adding two RBI and two doubles. 
 
Lexi Petrof, Akron       
Pitcher, Sophomore, Ligonier, Pa. | Ligonier HS      
 
Sophomore Lexi Petrof picked up her first win and first save of the 2020 campaign going 1-0 at the Madiera Beach Tournament. The Zips righty tossed 11.2 innings, gave up 13 hits, six runs, five earned, struck out five and walked four while the opposition hit just .271 against her. 
 
Payton Gottshall, Bowling Green      
Pitcher, Freshman, Massillon, Ohio (Perry)  
 
Bowling Green freshman pitcher Payton Gottshall had a stellar first weekend as a Falcon. In her collegiate debut, she threw a complete-game one-hitter, striking out 17 batters in seven innings as the Falcons topped Tennessee Tech. Gottshall faced just two batters over the minimum, allowing one hit and one walk. She struck out nine consecutive hitters at one point in the game. BGSU single-game records are incomplete, but no Falcon pitcher has struck out more than 17 batters in a game since at least 1995. Gottshall also picked up a win in relief against the host school at the Chattanooga Challenge, allowing two runs and four hits in six innings of work. She struck out nine batters in that win. Gottshall allowed a combined three earned runs in 11 innings in her other two games, but the BG offense was shut out in both contests. On the weekend, Gottshall had a 1.75 ERA and allowed opponents to hit just .179 against her. She had a WHIP of 1.08.
 
Deborah Jones, Ball State      
Starting Pitcher, Freshman, Unionville, Ind./Bloomington North   
 
In her two wins this past weekend, Ball State freshman pitcher Deborah Jones has limited the opposition to just six hits and one earned run over 13.0 innings of work … She struck out 12 total batters, including a career-high 10 in Friday's win over the Dolphins … She also limited opposing teams to a .136 batting average and issued only two walks.
