BUFFALO, NY – Four players scored in double figures as the University at Buffalo women's basketball team concluded the year 2020 with an 87-66 wire-to-wire victory over Western Michigan at Alumni Arena on Tuesday afternoon.
Buffalo was led by sophomore guard Dyaisha Fair who recorded a season-high 30 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists. Junior Keowa Walters recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Jazmine Young scored a season-high 15 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists and freshman Cheyenne McEvans added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Bulls opened the game on a 6-0 run, including back-to-back buckets by Gaba, to take the early lead. The Broncos answered with an 8-2 run on a pair of triples to tie the game at eight but McEvans sliced to the basket for two to give UB a 10-8 lead at the first media timeout. The Bulls would get aggressive on offense, putting together a 12-0 run, capped by a triple from Fair and a transition bucket from Young, to take a 20-8 lead at the 1:29 mark and the Bulls would extend the run to 19-1 to take a 27-9 lead at the end of the first. The nine first quarter points were the fewest allowed by UB in a quarter this season.
Back-to-back baskets by Walters and Young gave UB a 22 point lead early in the second quarter. Both teams would slow offensively as neither team recorded a field goal for about four minutes before Walters got a second chance jumper to go to give the Bulls a 34-12 lead at the media timeout. Buffalo would start to turn defense into offense as Fair hit a transition three off the feed from Young to give UB its largest lead of the first half, 40-16, and the Bulls would lead 42-23 at the break.
The two teams would trade baskets to start the third quarter before a 6-0 Broncos run cut the UB lead to 48-36 at the 6:27 mark, but a pull up triple from Fair and a second chance layup by Walters gave the Bulls a 55-38 lead at the media timeout. The Broncos would start to heat up from deep as Maddie Watters drained a three to cut the UB lead to 57-44 at the 3:04 mark but Young sliced to the basket for two and Evans drilled a corner three to give the Bulls a 64-49 lead at the end of the third.
It would be a back-and-forth affair to start the fourth quarter before the Bulls put together a 7-0 run, capped by a pair of transition buckets from McEvans and Fair, to take a 77-54 lead at the 4:34 mark. A 5-0 WMU run cut the lead to 77-59 at 3:43 mark but pair of triples by Jessika Schiffer gave UB an 83-62 lead and freshman Ramatoulaye Keita scored her first career basket on a floater in the paint to seal the victory.
Sophomore Loren Christie recorded a career-high four blocks and the Bulls set a season-high with five rejections in the win. Buffalo dominated the paint, outscoring the Broncos 46-16 inside, while also holding the 47-42 edge on the glass. The Bulls also turned 16 WMU turnovers into 24 points in transition.
"It's really great with everything going on for our players with finals and everything else to be able to put a game together like they did today, it warms my heart," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "Elea started off strong again with three straight baskets and gave us calmness out there and then Keowa- came in and crashed the boards hard as well. I can't say enough about our guard play with Hanna leading the way and Jazmine coming off the bench and disrupting the defense. Cheyenne is such a special player who is really learning the game and Dyaisha is one of the best players in the county and made 30 points look easy."
The Bulls have some time off for the holidays before starting 2021 at Miami (OH) on January 2.
