AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron women's basketball team broke open a close game with a strong offensive performance to close the first half en route to posting a 70-60 victory over Northern Kentucky (0-2) on Tuesday evening at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Senior F Jordyn Dawson (Huntington, W.Va.) and sophomore G Rachel Martindale (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led a trio of Zips scoring in double figures with 17 points apiece, while sophomore F Lonasia Brewer (Akron, Ohio) added 11 points.
Martindale finished the contest with career-high marks in scoring (17), three-pointers (5) and rebounds (4), while Dawson pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and equaled a career-best with three blocked shots.
Akron concluded the evening shooting nearly 45 percent (.446) from the field, including connecting on seven three-pointers. The Zips held the Norse to a 36.7 percent shooting effort and registered a 27-13 advantage off turnovers after forcing Northern Kentucky into 19 miscues.
The opening quarter proved to be a back-and-forth affair as Dawson scored seven points in the stanza for Akron, one that ended with the score tied at 13.
The Zips regained the lead to open the second quarter before Northern Kentucky squared the game at 21 at the 6:45 mark.
Sparked by four points from Brewer and a triple from freshman Alexis Stewart (Hamilton, Ontario), Akron went on a 7-1 run over the next 2:14 to assume a 28-22 lead with 4:31 remaining before halftime.
Led by eight points from Martindale, including a pair of three-pointers, the Zips closed the quarter on a 14-11 run to take a 42-33 advantage into the intermission.
Akron finished the second stanza connecting on 10 of their 14 attempts in the quarter, including a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.
Martindale led the Zips with 11 first-half points as Akron shot more than 47 percent (.471) from the field.
Akron used an 8-2 run over a 3:24 span midway through the third quarter to assume a 15-point lead, 52-37, after a three-pointer from Martindale at the 4:19 mark.
After three periods, the Zips led the Norse, 53-45.
Akron saw five players score over the final 10 minutes as the Zips earned a 70-60 triumph past Northern Kentucky.
Akron's next scheduled contest is slated for Dec. 13 as the Zips will open Mid-American Conference play traveling to Buffalo. Additional non-conference games as well as changes to the league schedule may be announced in the coming weeks. The contest against the Bulls can be heard on 640 WHLO-AM.
