AKRON
Akron stands 9-9 heading into week 5 of Mid-American Conference action. The Zips are 2-0 when squaring off against a MAC East Divisional foe picking up a victory against Bowling Green (76-73) and Miami (70-62). Against the RedHawks, senior point guard Shaunay Edmonds recorded her 1,000th career-point becoming the 18th Zip in program history to reach the career milestone. The Zips conclude its two-game road trip at Ohio on Jan. 29, before returning home to James A. Rhodes Arena on Feb. 1 against Eastern Michigan.
BALL STATE
The Cardinals defeated the Buffalo Bulls for the first time in two years by a score of 69-65 last Wednesday night in Worthen Arena. The Cardinals have won eight of their last 10 meetings against Kent State. Oshlynn Brown averaged yet another double-double this week helping the Cardinals to victories over Buffalo and Miami. She averaged 17. 5 points and 11.5 rebounds and now has 27 double-doubles for her career and 10 double-doubles this season.
BOWLING GREEN
A slow start was too much for the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to overcome Saturday afternoon (Jan. 25), as the Falcons fell, 79-69 to Ohio. Fourth-year Falcon Caterrion Thompson scored 20 points, tying her season high, while junior Madisen Parker added 15, including five three-point field goals.
BUFFALO
Buffalo fell at Ball State on Wednesday before defeating Kent State on Saturday to move to 4-3 in MAC play. Freshman Dyaisha Fair is currently fourth in the country in scoring at 22.1 points per game and ranks in the top-10 in three point field goals made (3.18). Buffalo has now held a total of nine opponents under 59 points this season, going a perfect 9-0 in those games.
CENTRAL MICHIGAN
CMU continued to its steady march to March, and through the MAC schedule, with victories last week over Eastern Michigan and Toledo. The margin of victory in both games was seven points, and the route to victory was nearly identical: The Chippewas used a fourth-quarter surge to take control and snuff out the opponent. Junior guard Micaela Kelly spearheaded the CMU victories as she averaged a double-double – 24 points, 10 rebounds – in the two wins and was named the MAC West Player of the Week for the fifth time this season. Kelly ranks second nationally in scoring at 23.9 points per game.
EASTERN MICHIGAN
After a quick two-game homestand, the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team is back on the road for a Mid-American Conference clash with the University of Toledo, Jan. 29. EMU is 4-3 in Mid-American Conference play, and picked up its first divisional win of the year, over NIU, 62-55, Jan. 25. Junior Autumn Hudson was a force to be reckoned with on both ends of the floor against NIU, Jan. 25. The Richwood, Ohio native scored a team-best 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while hauling in 10 rebounds, also a team-high.
KENT STATE
Kent State looks to get back on the winning track against Ball State on Wednesday night at the M.A.C. Center with tip scheduled for 7 p.m. The Golden Flashes (10-7, 3-3 MAC) had a three-game winning streak ended in a 57-44 setback to Buffalo on Saturday. Five Golden Flashes are scoring in double-figures for the season.
MIAMI
Last week, Lauren Dickerson set the program record for career three-pointers attempted and sits just two points behind second on Miami's all-time scoring list. Dickerson has 1,977 career points. Miami University has postoponed the Wednseday night game against Western Michigan and will be made up at a later date.
NORTHERN ILLINOIS
NIU had one of its best offensive performances on Jan. 22 against Ohio, scoring 79 points with 19 assists… The Huskies tied a single-game program record with 15 three-pointers against the Bobcats… NIU shot a season-high 47.5 percent from the field and 50 percent from the three-point arc… Freshman forward A’Jah Davis recorded her first career double-double against Ohio with season-highs 17 points and 17 rebounds; she’s the first NIU freshman to have a double-double since Courtney Woods in 2016… Woods averaged 24.5 points per game last week, setting season-highs with 27 points and nine rebounds at Eastern Michigan… She now has 1,983 career points, 17 away from becoming the Huskies’ third 2,000-point scorer.
OHIO
Erica Johnson was spectacular in Ohio's wins over NIU and Bowling Green. At NIU, Johnson set a career-high with 32 points on 7-of-11 shooting, where she was 10-of-12 from the free throw line. Ohio is 44-19 all-time against Akron and has won three-straight over the Zips. Last time out against Akron, Ohio won, 81-71 on March 2, 2019. Cece Hooks had 31 points for Ohio in the win while Erica Johnson posted 19 and Amani Burke had 13.
TOLEDO
Toledo will look to continue its winning ways at home when it entertains Mid-American Conference West Division foe Eastern Michigan (9-9, 4-3 MAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 29. The Rockets are riding a five-game winning streak at home, outscoring their opponents by 9.2 ppg (70.2-61.0) during this unbeaten stretch.
WESTERN MICHIGAN
The Western Michigan women's basketball game at Miami (Ohio), scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. has been postponed. The contest will be made up at a later date. After two straight losses, the Broncos were back in mid-season form against Akron, moving to 11-7 overall and 4-3 in conference The Western Michigan women's basketball team earned a season sweep over Akron with a 79-71 win over the Zips on Saturday.
