BOONE, N.C. – Sophomore Anna Smarrelli netted the first two goals of her career in Appalachian State field hockey's 3-0 victory over Davidson on Sunday at Brandon and Erica M. Adcock Field.

The Mountaineers (4-0) have compiled their first four-game winning streak since 2017. Appalachian defeated Saint Louis, Ball State and Central Michigan twice during 2017's four-game stretch.

"These first four games have been a rollercoaster," head coach Meghan Dawson said. "Each game we've been competing in has had its ups and downs and what has really shone through is our grit as a team. We've played until the last whistle, played through adversity and played through frustration. You can see the team coming together as a whole."

After a slow start to the first period, Smarrelli found the back of the net on a pass from freshman Sydney Lee. Smarrelli's first career goal came on Lee's second assist of the season to propel App State to a 1-0 advantage. Smarrelli's goal marked the only score in a first half that saw just three shots combined between both teams.

In the second half, senior goalkeeper Rachel Gaines and App State's defense withstood Davidson's pressure, shutting out the Wildcats despite allowing eight shots. Gaines made four saves while junior Annette Jaroszrecorded her first defensive save of the season. With Sunday's stop, Jarosz tied the App State record for defensive saves in a career (recorded since 2001) with 12.

The Mountaineers scored their final two goals in the contest's final three minutes. Smarrelli registered her second goal with just under three minutes on the clock, firing home a layoff pass from freshman Carli Ciocco. Ciocco's assist off the penalty corner marked her first point as a Mountaineer.

Freshman Rachel Fleig then notched her first-career goal off a deflected strike from sophomore Friederike Stegen. Stegen drilled a shot from the left side before Fleig's touch guided the ball into the goal cage.

App State tied the Wildcats (0-4) in shots with nine apiece. Freshman Madison Miles paced the Mountaineers with three shots while Smarrelli and junior Meghan Smart recorded two shots each.

App State hits the road again with a pair of matches in Pennsylvania. The Mountaineers travel to Loretto, Pa., to face Saint Francis (0-4) on Sept. 13 before closing out their road trip at Lock Haven (2-1) on Sept. 15. The Black and Gold fell 3-2 at home to Saint Francis in overtime this past season.
