FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood field hockey team was defeated by Georgetown 2-1 on Friday afternoon at the Athletics Complex. Olivia Wawrzyniak had the lone goal for the Lancers, who held the advantage in shots 22-11, but were unable to get the equalizing goal after falling behind in the fourth quarter.
"I think as a group we are pretty disappointed," said head coach Iain Byers. "I think we probably did enough to win the game, but a couple of missed opportunities up front and lapses in the back cost us."
"It's pretty disappointing because I think we could have been the better team if we played properly. At 1-2, and we are going to have a look at ourselves over the weekend and come back stronger on Monday and practice hard and see where we stand. I think there is more to come from this team—that performance was part of who we are but not the whole thing."
The 22 shots for Longwood (1-2) were a season high, led by Wawrzyniak's 10. Forward Karly Harwood added three, while Charlotte Wilm, Briana Greene, and Camilla Duarte each added two apiece. Georgetown (2-1) goalkeeper Ciara Weets made 13 saves to hold off the Lancers for the victory.
Longwood keeper Katie Wyman made four saves in the game. She was aided by a backline of Lea Van Luvender, Rio Weber, and Clara Meschini.
The loss for Longwood was just the second at home in seven meetings with Georgetown, as they fall to 5-2 all-time against the Hoyas in Farmville.
"I think we are right there," said Wawrzyniak. "Coach Byers told us that we are 80 percent there, and it's the last 20 percent that we are working on. I think that with just a little more drive and hunger on the field, and practice this week pushing ourselves a little harder, we will be there next game."
Jordan Sweeney opened the scoring in the second quarter when she collected a rebound from teammate Georgina Eberle and fired it home to give Georgetown an early lead.
Wawrzyniak knotted the game at 1-1 just before the third quarter ended when she followed up her own shot to score her second goal of the season. Georgetown's Ali Cronin broke up the tie in the fourth when she got to a loose ball following a corner and snuck it past Lancer goalkeeper Katie Wyman to make the score 2-1, where it would stay.
The Lancers are back in action on Friday, Sept. 13 when they take on Merrimack at home. The game is set to start at 12 p.m.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Central Michigan field hockey team was defeated by eighth-ranked Iowa, 11-0, in a nonconference game on Friday at the Hawkeyes' Grant Field.
The loss was CMU's first of the season. The Chippewas (2-1) are scheduled to play Columbia in a nonconference game on Saturday (3 p.m.). It is the Lions' season opener.
"I think that's the best thing about playing back to back games," CMU coach Catherine Ostoich said. "You don't have time to dwell on (the loss); you've got to move on to the next game.
"The mindset is we just have to take this (Iowa) game for what it is. We talked about a couple of things that we need to move forward, and then we need to forget about it."
How It Happened
The Hawkeyes, an NCAA Tournament participant last season, held CMU without a shot while collecting 36.
They led 2-0 after one period and 6-0 at halftime.
"A couple times we had opportunities to do things," Ostoich said. "We'd come up with (the ball) and then we'd just give it back. That's something we're really going to work on tomorrow and through the rest of the season.
"We just were not on our marks as tightly as we need to be. So that's something that we're really going to be looking to do better."
CMU goalkeeper Keelin Broeker, a redshirt freshman, made 13 saves.
Value The Ball
Ostoich stressed how important it is for the Chippewas to maintain possession, especially against an opponent the caliber of Iowa.
"We talked that we've got to value the ball," she said. "I think that was something we talked about in the first two games. … We just have to value the ball."
