EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Ball State field hockey team (1-2) dropped a close 2-1 decision to UC Davis (1-1) Thursday afternoon at Ralph Young Field located on the campus of Michigan State.

It seemed like deja vu, as last season's contest against the Aggies and the Cardinals would also be decided by just one point with UC Davis winning in overtime, 5-4.

Unfortunately, the same outcome happened today, despite the Cardinals taking control in the opening minutes after redshirt junior Sierra Jefferson knocked in her second goal of the season to give Ball State the 1-0 edge with just under five minutes shaved off the clock.

After that, both teams put up a good fight defensively for the remainder of the first frame. The Aggies would even the score at the start of the second quarter.

Right before the third quarter, UC Davis capitalized off of a penalty corner at the 26:59 mark to pull ahead 2-1.

The remainder of the game was a defensive battle as both teams went scoreless in the third and fourth quarters. Ball State had three opportunities to score in the closing minutes as junior Audrey Tabor along with teammate freshman Lexi Kansky both got off shots but was unable to connect with the back of the cage. Redshirt senior Michelle Shampton also took a penalty corner with only three minutes remaining but could not score.

The Ball State field hockey team continues this week's action when it hosts Saint Louis in the Cardinals home opener Friday at 3 p.m. in the Briner Sports Complex.
