CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Sparked by first-place finishes from senior Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia) and junior Andre Bollam-Godbott (Brunswick, Ohio), the University of Akron women's and men's cross country squads captured top-team honors in Division I at the All-Ohio Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Cedarville University on Saturday, Sept. 28.
For the second consecutive meet, Andrews and Bollam-Godbott paced the field winning the women's 6K and men's 8K, crossing the line in 21:42.6 and 25:08.8, respectively.
In the women's race, the Zips tied Dayton for top honors in the Division 1 field, as each school registered 42 points. The Flyers edged Akron by three points for the overall team championship.
"Excellent performance for our team today as we finished first, third and fifth with our top-three girls today," said Zips' women's head coach Trey Brokaw. "We had a strong top-three with Mackenzie (Andrews), Lindsey (Scarton) and Haley (Hess). Four and five were still up there in the top portion of the race, however, Dayton just edged ahead of us for team title overall today. Really proud of the girls, we are in a really good spot to perform well heading into Notre Dame next week."
The Zips' men's squad edged runner-up Dayton by two points to win the men's Division I competition, while the Flyers narrowly bested Akron in the overall field, by one point.
"We had a pretty exciting race today," Akron head men's cross country coach Lee LaBadie commented. "Andre (Bollam-Godbott) got out in front and really piled it on that first mile. Everybody was right there, we had the other seven guys running behind. He had a big lead and kept on going. Our group kept solid through three miles. The heat kind of got to us a little bit and we faded back and broke up, but that was our first 8K, and I was extremely pleased with our group responding to the competition."
Andrews captured the women's 6K race in a time of 21:42.6. She was followed closely across the line by junior Lindsey Scarton (Berea, Ohio), who posted a third-place finish on the strength of a career-best time of 22:10.4.
Senior Haley Hess (Curtice, Ohio), freshman Olivia Anaple (Blue Ash, Ohio) and sophomore Lizzy Gurko(Northfield, Ohio), who crossed the line in 22:26.7, 23:11.1 and 23:35.5, respectively, rounded out the Zips' scoring efforts.
Additionally, junior Leah Recker (Findlay, Ohio) and freshman Morgan Jankowski (Brook Park, Ohio) recorded times of 24:47.2 and 24:49.1.
After finishing second overall a year ago, Bollam-Godbott paced the Akron men's scoring contingent winning the men's 8K in a time of 25:05.8.
Senior Marc Migliozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was next across the line for the Zips registering a time of 25:18.0 to place third.
Recording times of 26:06.7, 26:22.1 and 26:29.7, respectively, to round out Akron's scoring efforts were seniors Nick Stricklen (Lexington, Ohio) and Jeremiah Fitzgerald (Mantua, Ohio) and freshman Chase Easterling (Mt. Orab, Ohio).
The Zips also garnered times of 26:31.3 (40th), 26:49.1 (53rd) and 27:13.8 (71st) from junior Oliver Huffman(Augusta, Ga.), redshirt junior Jacob Ondash (Hiram, Ohio) and freshman Aidan Harr (New Philadelphia, Ohio).
Central Michigan // Loyola Lake Front Invitational
CHICAGO – The Central Michigan men were seventh and the women finished eighth on Saturday in the Loyola Lakefront Invitational.
The Chippewa men finished with 206 points, 34 points out of a top-five finish. The CMU women had 244 points, 63 points behind seventh-place Milwaukee. Eighteen teams comprised the women's race, 15 comprised the men's.
Men
The CMU men were paced by two familiar faces in Mark Beckmannn and Zachary Sleeman, who finished in 25:38.19 and 25:49.05, good for 16th and 28th place, respectively.
"He's just a really strong leader for our team," CMU coach Jenny Swieton said of Beckmann, a senior. "He's got it all figured out, and I think that's really good for the younger guys. And Sleeman, he just felt really good coming in and he knew something good was going to happen, and it did."
Also for the Chippewas, Riad Rababeh (25:55.98) finished 36th, Chandler Lorf (26.21.46) was 64th, Will Finch (26:24.34) was 67th, and freshman Adam Rzentkowski (26:32.52) was 77th. Rababeh, Lorf and Finch are sophomores.
"Will Finch had a really great day, which is awesome," said Swieton. "I think (Rzentkowski) just had a little bit of an off day. For the most part, they're getting there, just not there yet."
Women
Freshman Emily Shelton led the CMU women for the second-consecutive race, placing 14th with a time of 18:04.80.
"Emily Shelton ran well," said Swieton. "She got out well and competed throughout."
Joining Shelton in leading the CMU women were freshman Maddy Boyd (18:44.79) and sophomore Lauren Beckmann (19:01.32), who finished 37th and 51st, respectively.
Despite their best efforts, coach Swieton left the meet unsatisfied.
"For the most part, we just ran too timid as a team," said Swieton. "I think we didn't get out at the beginning and they just got stuck and couldn't work their way up, so it's definitely not our best race, but it's definitely something to learn from."
Aslo for the CMU women, Ana Garcia (19:16.83) placed 75th.
Adverse Conditions
Swieton said the cold and wet weather played a factor in the Chippewas' performance, something that will help them better adjust in future races.
"On both sides, men and women, we have very young teams, and I just don't know that they handle adverse conditions as well yet," she said. "We're trying to get them to learn that everybody is under the same conditions; you've just got to get out there and compete. It's not about what the weather is like or what your time is, it's about finishing ahead of other people."

The Miami men turned in a solid performance with a fifth-place finish, while the women's squad finished eighth among a strong field that included four nationally ranked teams.
Obsaa Feda, a true freshman from Maryland, led Miami with an 11th-place finish in his first official collegiate run. After running as an unattached athlete during Miami's first two meets, he ran a time of 25:03.3 that was good for the best 8K mark by a RedHawk so far this season.
Just behind him was redshirt freshman Charlie Harders, who turned in a 8K personal best with a run of 25:09.6 for 14th place. Ryan Sharkey, Mitchell Towne, and Alex Tam were the RedHawks' other scoring runners.

Northern Illinois // Loyola Lake Front Invitational
CHICAGO – Junior Ashley Tutt (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) earned individual honors and the Northern Illinois University cross country team won the team title in the Women's Maroon Race at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Saturday morning (Sept. 28).
"We are definitely excited," said NIU head coach Adrian Myers. "Winning feels good at all times and we are definitely excited. Our race execution was good, we talked about what each person needed to do and some specific things we wanted to work on, and the follow-through was really good. That is something we are trying to work on every single week, continuing to learn how to win and piecing that together."
Facing rainy, muddy and windy conditions near the Lake Michigan shoreline, Tutt was first across the line in the five-kilometer race, earning her third consecutive win to start the season, with a time of 17:26.76. Tutt's victory helped the Huskies score 60 points, just edging host Loyola who finished with 62, as NIU won its third team title in three meets this season.
"Ashley is putting herself in a position where she is very hard to beat," said Myers. "She has worked really hard for this, she has put her focus on doing what she needs to do for the team and sometimes that means taking some risks and going for it, so hats off to her for being consistent in everything up to this point. She also has a good support group in Mackenzie Callahan, Ericka Hibser and Vivian Overbeck who have been equally consistent doing their jobs.
"Everyone has played their role, especially Ashley holding down that number one spot. Winning races is not easy, as a team or as an individual. You have to hope that everything in your body and in your mind is at full-go, and if it's off there is no hiding it. To be this consistent and to string this much success together in a row is pretty hard to do."
Three Huskies finished in the top-10 as junior Mackenzie Callahan (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) and senior Ericka Hibser (Lewistown, Ill./Lewistown) joined Tutt. Callahan earned fifth-place in a time of 17:47.38, posting her third top-five of the season, while Hibser finished 10th with a time of 18:18.05, marking the third time in three races that the Huskie senior has finishing inside the top 10.
Also finishing in the scoring positions for the Huskies were senior Vivian Overbeck (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) who was 20th overall in a time of 18:18.05 and sophomore Hannah Ricci (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) who took 27th overall, posting a time of 18:29.47?

Toledo Men // Ohio State Invitational
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sophomore Raymond Korir led the Rockets, placing second at the Buckeye Preview in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, with a time of 24:37.2. The Rockets posted a seventh-place team finish with 170 points.
"Obviously Raymond had a great race for us up front and he's really learning how to control his effort levels throughout a full cross country race," said head coach Andrea-Grove McDonough. "Any time you can contend for a win in a quality field like this one, it's a good day. There was definitely a lack of experience shown today with some of our younger guys. Jake Rethman is emerging as a very consistent and reliable performer for us. The main takeaway is that we have some really bright spots to build around."
Following Korir, freshman Jacob Harris stopped the clock at 25:32.4 to finish 32nd. Freshman Jake Rethman was the next Rocket across the finish line, posting a time of 26:27.0.
Toledo Women // Ohio State Invitational
COLUMBUS, Ohio. - The University of Toledo women's cross country team finished tenth with 260 points at the Buckeye Preview in Columbus, Ohio, Saturday morning.
"The women had a tough day on the course with some of our top women struggling a bit," said head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough. "The illness that has run through our team the last week seemed to take a toll today on our results. Bright spots were the great race Stephanie Sherman had to lead us today and knowing we still have a few athletes to put in the lineup is reassuring. I was proud that the women kept fighting and didn't give up on the race."
Senior Stephanie Sherman set the pace for the Rockets, finishing 43rd with a time of 22:11.1. Junior Michelle Hostettler followed, stopping the clock at 22:14.7 to take 49th and sophomore Claire Steigerwald was the third Rocket to cross the finish line, clocking a time of 22:43.5 to take 72nd.
