BUFFALO, NY – It was a complete 90-minute effort for the University at Buffalo women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon with solid defensive work throughout and a goal from Marcy Barberic in the second half, giving the Bulls a 1-0 win over local rival Niagara at UB Stadium.
With the win the Bulls improve to 3-2-1 overall on the season, while Niagara falls to 4-2-1 on the year.
The scoring chances were few and far between in the first half with the two teams combining for just three shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes of play.
The Bulls had a couple good lucks early into the second half as Kara Daly and Barberic peppered Sabrina Locas with a pair of shots in a 30 second span but Locas came up with back-to-back stops. Later, Riley Bowers ripped one on net and off the cross bar and the ball just missed the bottom corner of the net on the way down as the game remained scoreless.
The scoreless game was broken in the 71st minute as Barberic drilled a ball into the upper left corner, just past the outstretched hands of Locas, to give UB a 1-0 lead.
The Purple Eagles had a pair of scoring chances over the final ten minutes of play but Emily Kelly stood tough making a pair of saves to secure the shutout.
Kelly recorded her first shutout win of the season, making a season-high six saves on the afternoon. Barberic led the team with a goal on five shots while Gurjeena Jandu and Daly recorded two shots a piece. The Bulls outshot the Purple Eagles 15-11 and held the 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Barberic was named Player of the Match by the UB coaches.
"I am pleased with the shutout win and some things we worked on this week in training," head coach Shawn Burke said. "We left some chances on the board, but overall we called on a lot of different players today so it was a true team win."
The Bulls will have a week off before traveling to Eugene, Oregon to take on the Ducks on Sunday, September 22, at 8pm (EST).

AKRON, Ohio– In a game that seemed destined for a 1-1 draw between the Akron women's soccer team and Eastern Kentucky in double-overtime, the Colonels found gold with just 30 seconds remaining in the match for the golden goal game-winner to drop the Zips, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium.
After Eastern Kentucky claimed a 1-0 advantage at the 85:25 mark on a penalty kick, the Zips tied the game up at one less than two minutes later as EKU was called for a penalty in the box at the 87'. Senior Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa.) stepped to the line and buried the equalizer for her third goal of the campaign.
The contest was a back-and-forth battle between the Zips and Colonels in a match that saw 23 total shots including a game-high 12 shots by Akron and 11 shots by EKU.
Offensively for the Zips, four players tallied a multi-shot performance on the afternoon behind a team-high three shots by sophomore Carly Pcholinsky (South Park, Pa.) and freshman Lucia Lobato (Galway, Ireland). Sophomore Sydney Ward (Connellsville, Pa.) and sophomore Aislinn Meaney (Ennis, Ireland) combined to notch four shots while both of Ward's shots fell on frame. Amato and redshirt sophomore Charley Kale (Sylvania, Ohio) each registered on a shot.
In the net, freshman Libby Harper (Hatfield, England) made her fourth start for Akron and competed in a career-high 109 minutes between the posts while making a pair of saves for the Zips.
The first half between the Zips and Colonels was a battle of possession going back-and-forth up the field. Akron was busy inside the box when playing inside the offensive third. Lobato registered all three of her shots in the first half with results landing wide (2'), blocked by a defender (30'), and her final shot pulled in for a save (30').
Akron came close to striking first in the contest courtesy of Ward in the 58'. The Zips were awarded a corner kick at the 56:39 mark and junior Anaya Donelan (Warrington, England) headed to the corner to put the ball in play. Donelan sent a curling strike into the box that found the head of Ward but was turned away by an EKU defender. The rebound of the shot went directly back to Ward who sent another header on goal but the shot was corralled by the keeper.
Following the back-to-back penalty kicks by the Colonels and Zips, the contest headed into extra time all squared at one.
At the 99:19 mark, Pcholinsky nearly ended the contest as the midfielder ripped a strike from straight away just outside the box but the ball was punched over the net for a save.
Kale attempted a shot in the final overtime period at the 105:49 mark, but the attempt landed wide of the net.
The Zips women's soccer team will conclude the non-conference portion of the 2019 campaign on Thursday, Sept. 19, at FirstEnergy Stadium. Akron plays host to visiting Robert Morris at 7 p.m. Prior to the start of the contest, the Zips will honor its senior, Ashley Amato, on senior night.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast's Marjorie Boilesen scored two goals while the Ball Soccer team could manage none, and the Cardinals fell, 2-0, Sunday afternoon.
The defeat dropped BSU to 5-2-0 on the season and the Eagles improved to 3-3-0 with the win.
"Today was another game where we started slow and it put us behind early," said Ball State head coach Josh Rife. "In the second half, and even after the red card, I thought the girls responded well and finished strong. It was a long, tough trip with lots of positives to take away, but also some harsh lessons learned. Hopefully we are better because of it."
The majority of the first half was even between the two sides until FGCU broke through in the 31st minute. The 1-0 score took the game into halftime. Just minutes into the second half, the Eagles produced a breakaway that saw Tristin Stuteville come out to make a play on the ball. A collision with the attacker resulted in red card and forced the Cardinals to finish the match with just 10 players.
On the subsequent free kick, Boilesen scored her second goal of the afternoon which put the game out of reach. Ball State's offense came alive afterward with three shots on goal, but the Cardinals could not find the back of the net.
As a team Ball State produced six shots with three on goal and earned two corner kicks. Stuteville made three saves on the day.
Ball State will now return home from a tough weekend in Florida to face Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday in Muncie. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. ET, and BSU will honor its senior prior to the match. The contest can be viewed on ESPN+.

"On the defensive side, it was good to see our work rate through the whole match," said NIU head coach Julie Colhoff. "The biggest thing is our work rate on the attacking side to transition faster, that is what we have to clean up. There were more moments today where we chose our better selves, than the alternative, but I think there are still things that we can clean up so that is consistent. For us this week it is all about consistency."
