FARMVILLE, Va. – Home field advantage made itself evident for the Lancers this weekend.
For the second time in three days, Longwood (3-2) won 3-0 on its home field, defeating Davidson Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field. Karly Harwood led the Lancers with a pair of goals, and Katie Wyman kept the Wildcats out of the net for her 12th career shutout.
"I feel like we ground out that win," said head coach Iain Byers. "It was a tough game, so to score three goals and concede none was a point of pride for us. I think there is more to us—I do think we can do better, and I do think the team thinks we can do better as well. We won, so we have to be proud of that, but it was the definition of a ground-out win."
Longwood totaled 19 shots as its offense generated three goals for the third time this season. Sophomore midfielder Sophia Loscher added a goal to go along with Harwood's two, and senior Olivia Wawrzyniak tallied an assist.
Wyman recorded six saves in the shutout effort, her second in two games. This weekend's performance was the first time she notched consecutive shutouts since 2017, when she shut down LIU Brooklyn and MAC foe Central Michigan on Sept. 16 and Sept. 23. She was aided by strong defensive efforts from Rio Weber, Kylie Ryan, Clara Meschini, Cammy Toddy, and Luna Lopez, who locked down Lognwood's half of the field and helped hold Davidson (1-5) to just six shots on net despite conceding 11 penalty corners.
"I think we played well as a team," said Loscher, whose goal today was her second of the season. "But there is still improvement for us, such as playing more together and switching sides of the field better."
Harwood opened the scoring for Longwood when she got to a rebound in the arc following a shot from teammate Charlotte Wilm. She was able to collect it and power a shot past Davidson goalkeeper Sarah Zeszotarski to put Longwood ahead 1-0.
Loscher doubled the Lancer lead in the third quarter when she dribbled through the Wildcat defense and drilled a shot into the back of the net, making the score 2-0.
Harwood tallied her second score of the game in the third quarter. Wawrzyniak fired a missile into the arc towards Harwood, who managed a perfect deflection, redirected the ball into the goal to give the Lancers a 3-0 lead.
Longwood will begin MAC play on Friday, Sept. 20 when they take on Central Michigan in Farmville. The game is set to start at 4 p.m.
