PISCATAWAY, N. J. - Redshirt senior Michelle Shampton scored the lone goal for the Cardinals this afternoon but it wasn't enough, as Ball State would drop its season opener by a score of 4-1 at No. 19 Rutgers Saturday at the Bauer Track/Field Hockey Complex.

Shampton continues to be a strong asset to the Cardinals offensively, scoring her first goal of the season off of a carry in shot from the right side of the Rutgers goalie which occurred at the 28:48 mark in the second quarter of play. Unfortunately, that would be the lone goal for Ball State. Shampton is off to a good start though, as she led the Cardinals offensively last season with five goals.

Despite the loss, it was an excellent effort by the Cardinals defense in today's game as Ball State had a total of eight saves which was led by junior goal keeper Grace Chavezwith five. Shampton, freshman Angel Nkosi and seniors Rachel Pereira along with classmate Arantxa Rosainz Caloca also notched defensive saves against the Scarlet Knights.

The Ball State field hockey team continues its two-game road swing when it travels to the University of Delaware Sunday for a neutral site match-up against Davidson beginning at noon.

NEWARK, Del. – The Miami University field hockey team opened the 2019 season with a 0-2 loss against No. 22 Albany on Saturday. Starting this season, games will be played in four 15-minute quarters.

"I think we started out very good in the first and second quarters," said senior midfielder Marie Görner. "We were setting the tone for the first half but couldn't finish with a goal. In the third quarter, we gave Albany control five minutes in which they dominated and they took advantage of it by scoring two goals. In the fourth quarter we put a lot of pressure on Albany, however, we still were not able to score goals or take advantage of our chances. That's definitely something we have to work on for the future."

The Great Danes earned the first penalty corner of the game in the fifth minute of play but Miami cleared the attempt without any damage. Albany took the first shot of the game in the 10th minute but freshman goalkeeper Isabelle Perese registered her first collegiate save to keep the game scoreless.

Albany was awarded a green card  during the first quarter but there was no score after 15 minutes of play.

The RedHawks earned their first penalty corner chance in the 26th minute of play but could not capitalize. Lexie Nugent took Miami's first shot as the first half came to a close. The game was scoreless at halftime.

The Great Danes broke the tie just four minutes into the second half with a goal on the deflection after Perese made the initial save on the penalty corner chance. Albany scored on another penalty corner just two minutes later to take a 2-0 lead.

Kylie Herb's shot on goal in the third quarter is turned aside as Miami trailed 0-2 after three quarters of play.

Taylor Curran and Gabby Luxardo both took shots on goal during the fourth quarter but both were saved.

Perese made two saves during the contest.

"Despite the scoreboard, the team found a lot of positive takeaways," said junior forward/midfielder Lexie Nugent. "We are looking forward to continue to improve as a team. We're anxious to get right back at it!"

Miami faces No. 16 Delaware on Monday at noon.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – All it took was one day for the Lancers to bounce back with a win.

In their second game in as many days, the Longwood field hockey team recorded their first win of the season with an impressive 4-0 victory over Long Island University on Saturday afternoon at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y.

The four goals for the Lancers (1-1), which ties their season-best mark from a year ago, were scored by four different players as Longwood received offensive contributions from players all over the field. This would be more than enough offense for redshirt senior Katie Wyman, who turned away all nine shots she faced to hold LIU (0-1) at bay for the shutout.

"It was nice to bounceback with a win," said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. "As a neutral site game, it was a difficult game with some challenges to overcome, but we did as a team and we are proud of what we did. There were a lot of things that we could have done better, but there are some things we did really well, so we are happy about that and ready to move on to Georgetown on Friday."

A two-time All-MAC performer, the shutout was the 10th of Wyman's standout career. She was aided defensively by a strong performance from backline Lea Van Luvender, Rio Weber, and Clara Meschini.

Junior Charlotte Wilm opened the scoring in the first quarter when she converted a penalty stroke to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Sophia Loscher dribbled in from the top of the circle before sending a strike past Long Island goalkeeper Rachel Vellis to make it 2-0 early in the second quarter, where the score would stay until the half.

Junior forward Karly Harwood redirected a pass from Clara Meschini to give the Lancers a 3-0 lead in the third before reigning MAC Freshman of the Year Luna Lopez closed the scoring with a penalty stroke goal to make it 4-0.

Long Island forward Sammy Bell registered 11 total shots in the game, with eight of them on frame. Goalkeeper Rachel Vellis recorded two saves for the Sharks.

Up next for the Lancers is their home-opener, when they take on Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m.
