The Akron volleyball team kicked off its 2019 season competing in the Homewood Suites Fort Myers classic, hosted by Florida Gulf Coast. The Zips opened with strong showings in both matches, but it would not prevail, as they would go on to lose to San Diego State, 3-0 (20-25, 19-25, 18-25), and host FGCU, 3-1 (17-25, 26-24, 19-25, 14-25).

Akron is now 0-2 to start its season, while the Aztecs improve to 3-0, and the Eagles pick up their first win of the season, 1-0.

"We did a number of things well today, one of which was pass at a high level. Unfortunately, we weren't as sharp as we could be offensively, and we made some service errors that were costly. Fortunately, these are fixable things that we can hopefully correct against a very good FGCU team tonight.

In the Zips match against San Diego State, Sophomore Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) led the Zips with 9 kills, while fellow sophomore Jen Durra (Painesville, Ohio) and junior Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) had 8 and 6 kills, respectively. Defensively, Adleta led the way with 12 digs, while Ochaya added eight. Junior setter Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) dished out 26 assists, while adding six digs.

Throughout the first set, the Zips played well, and stayed within 6 points of San Diego State for the majority of the set. Early in the set, the Zips were able to pull within two, (10-8), thanks to a block by sophomore Hannah Yaconis (Batavia, Ill.) and Ochaya.

The Aztecs would respond by scoring three consecutive points, forcing Akron to call their first of two timeouts. After the timeout, the Aztecs continued to increase the deficit, which forced Akron to call their final timeout of the set with its team down, (18-12).

The Zips showed an improved effort in the second set. After having gained an early lead (7-6), the Zips rattled off two consecutive points, thanks to a kill by Ochaya, followed by a big block by senior Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio) and Ochaya, which caused the Aztecs to call their first timeout. The Aztecs responded by scoring on seven of the next nine points, and ultimately forcing Akron to call its first timeout, down (16-13).

San Diego State would increase the deficit to five points, which led to Akron calling its second timeout, however the Aztecs would carry its momentum for the remainder of the set and put them ahead, two sets to none.

The third set, much like the first two, saw the Aztecs jump out to an early lead and not look back as they went on to take the final set, (25-18).

In Akron's loss to FGCU, Adleta and Karsner lead the offensive attack for the Zips, who finished with 14 and eight kills, respectively. Weigand dished out 37 assists, while adding five kills. Defensively, Sharrits finished with 21 digs, while Adleta added 11.

In the first set, the Zips opened strong. Weigand put away a well-set ball from Taylor Kuruzovich(Port Matilda, Pa.) to put the Zips ahead, (5-2). The Eagles would respond by scoring 10 of the next 12 points, putting them ahead (12-7). From there, the scoring went back and forth until a four-point run by FGCU would propel them far enough ahead to take the first set, 25-17.

The Eagles carried their momentum into the second set early, attaining a lead, (6-3), over the Zips. From there, the Zips' resilient offense fought back and were able to tie the game at 18. A kill by Weigand on the following point would propel them ahead and force FGCU to call their first timeout of the set.

Out of the timeout, the Zips continued to improve offensively, winning five of the next eight points. With the Zips a point away from taking the set, FGCU fought back to knot the score at 24. From there, two consecutive kills by senior Elya Karsner (Frankfort, Ky.) would lead Akron to the set victory, (26-24).

In the third set, both teams found their stride early on. FGCU quickly took a 4-0 lead, only to be taken right back by the Zips, scoring four in a row and tying the game. From there, back and forth scoring tied the game at eight, until a two-point run by the Eagles put them ahead, (10-8). The Eagles held a lead for the remainder of the set, eventually winning the set and putting them ahead, 2-1.

In the fourth set of the match, the Zips struggled to find its groove, as a five and four-point run by the Eagles in the heart of the set propelled them to win the match, 3-1.

"We did a nice job against a top 50 team on their home court by going into the break tied. We handled a number of situations well enough to put us in that position. Our challenge now is to sustain that for an entire match. We showed a good amount of resiliency with our performance improving from the first match to the second match today. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do tomorrow against another NCAA tournament team from last year".

The Zips will conclude the final day of the classic tomorrow, Aug. 31, taking on Bryant at 4 p.m.

Central Michigan 3, Maryland Eastern Shores 1
Box Score
The Central Michigan volleyball team opened its season on Friday, downing Maryland Eastern Shore in four sets at the St. Francis Brooklyn Terrier Classic.

The Chippewas posted a 25-15, 22-25, 25-22, 25-11 victory.

"I thought set one and four, we really dominated," CMU coach Mike Gawlik said. "I thought we were really good with all phases of our game. We put a lot of pressure on at the service line, and it allowed us to run some points.

"In set two, I thought they flipped the script on us. They got hot from behind the service line. They had a couple of servers who really put pressure on us. They had quite a few aces in that second set. We were constantly dealing with passes that were off the net, and only leaving us with one option.

"Overall, I was pretty pleased with the maturity as a team to kind of rebound from set two, a set that didn't go our way. We found a way to win in set three, and opened it up in set four from the service line."

HOW IT HAPPENED
After splitting the first two sets, CMU found themselves tied late in the third set at 22. They would score the next three points to win the set. CMU finished the fourth set with a .471 hitting percentage.

"When you're winning, you can serve a little more aggressively because you're like 'OK, I missed, it's no big deal, we're winning,'" Gawlik said. "When you're playing from behind, sometimes you stop serving aggressively. So, I thought in sets one and four, as we opened up a lead on the scoreboard, you can take a deep breath and serve with a lot more relaxed aggression."

As a team, CMU finished with 42 kills, 41 assists, a hitting percentage of .253, and 13 aces.

LEADERS
Junior outside hitter Kalina Smith led CMU in kills with 12, while sophomore middle blocker Maddie Whitfield added 10. Meg Kern had a team-high 13 digs, while setter Kendall Braate had 34 assists and 11 digs.

Middle blocker Lisbeth Rosario-Martinez had seven kills on 10 attempts, finished with a team-best .700 hitting percentage.

NEXT
CMU will play a doubleheader to finish the Terrier Classic on Saturday. The Chippewas are scheduled to play Saint Peter's at 9 a.m., and then will take on NJIT at 4:30 p.m.

A pair of kills each from Payne and Riemersma helped maintain that lead as Miami eventually took a 25-21 win.

After a kill from sophomore outside hitter Gaby Harper, Payne scored four straight blocks, teaming up for three of them with Powell to put the Red and White up 5-2 in set two. Miami continued to hold around a four point advantage until another block from Payne and Powell sparked a 6-1 run that gave the RedHawks their largest lead of the set at 19-10. NIU 1, SIUE 3 // Box Score
NIU 3, Fairleigh Dickinson 1 // Box Score

The Northern Illinois University volleyball team opened its 2019 season on Friday, splitting its first two matches of the NIU Invitational at Victor E. Court. The Huskies opened their day with a 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 25-14, 27-25) win over the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights, then closed the evening with a 3-1 (24-26, 25-23 16-25, 23-25) loss to the SIU Edwardsville Cougars.

"It was nice for us to win the first match of the day against FDU," said head coach Ray Gooden. "I think all the teams this weekend are in that position where they're all really trying to have a good start. I thought there were moments where we did some pretty good things. There were a little more peaks and valleys than we wanted. At the end, it was nice for us to pull out the really tough game at the end to win that match."

NIU (1-1) came out firing in its first set against FDU (0-2), hitting .294 as a team with three service aces from Kennedy Shelley (Burlington, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) to win it 25-21. After dropping the second set 25-18, the Huskies jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the third on the strength of kills by Jasmine Kemp (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb), Kennedy Wallace (Kansas City, Kan./Piper), and freshman Kaitlyn Bell (De Soto, Kan.). The NIU lead grew to 10 at 19-9 after another Kemp kill. NIU hit .478 in the third set, winning it 25-14.

The fourth set proved to be a back-and-forth affair with eight ties and three lead changes. The Huskies trailed 12-10 when back-to-back Miranda Karlen (Evansville, Wis./Evansville) aces sparked a 9-2 run that put NIU up 19-14. Bell had four kills in that stretch as well. The Knights chipped away at the Huskie advantage, eventually tying the set at 24 on a Victoria Demmene kill and taking a 25-24 lead on an NIU error. That was the last point for FDU, as NIU won the last three to win the set 27-25 and the match 3-1.

The Huskies hit .264 as a team against FDU with Bell leading the way with 14 kills. Kemp added 12 while hitting a team-high .478 and Wallace put down 11 kills. Balensiefer led the match with 49 assists as Karlen had a match-high 22 digs.

NIU's second match of the day against SIUE (1-1) was about as close a match can be, with three of the four sets decided by two points. The Huskies hung with the hot-hitting Cougars in the opening set, as SIUE hit .314 to NIU's .125. NIU battled out of a 20-16 hole to take a 23-20 lead with a 7-0 run that included two Karlen aces. The Cougars won six of the last seven points in the frame to win the set 26-24.

The Huskies used a 7-0 run midway through the second set to take a 22-15 lead, powered by a combined six kills from Bell and Wallace. NIU earned set point at 24-19 on a Balensiefer kill but had to withstand a late charge from the Cougars. SIUE won the next four points to get the score to 24-23. Kemp put down a kill on NIU's fifth set point to win the set 25-23 and tie the match at one set all. SIUE went back up in the match 2-1 with a 25-16 win in the third, hitting .333 to the Huskies' -.042.

The fourth set featured eight ties and three lead changes. NIU led early 7-5 when a Rachel McDonald kill sparked a 7-1 SIUE run that put the Cougars up 12-8. The Huskies stormed back with a 6-1 run of their own as a Peyton Tilly (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) kill put NIU back in the lead 20-17. NIU led 22-19 when a Gabby Wimes kill started a five-point SIUE run that gave the visitors match point at 24-22. The Huskies fought off one match point on a Tilly kill, but McDonald's 21st kill of the night gave SIUE the set 25-23 and that match 3-1.

"I think we need to have a better understanding of the situation," Gooden said following the SIUE match.
