The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team scored in each half, and the Falcon defense shut down Valparaiso University en route to a 2-0 win Friday evening (Aug. 30). The non-conference match, the home opener for the Falcons, was held at Cochrane Stadium.

Senior Maureen Kennedy and freshman Kennedy White scored for the Falcons (1-1-1). Kennedy knocked home the rebound after VU goalkeeper Georgia Henkel had saved her penalty kick with just under 10 minutes gone, giving BG the lead for good.

White scored midway through the second half, drilling a header on frame after a corner kick by sophomore Alexis Miller. Henkel was able to get her hands on the ball, but White's shot was hit with such force that Henkel could not keep it from going into the top of the net.

The Falcons held sizeable advantages in shots, shots on goal and corner kicks in the win.

Ohio 2, Cleveland State 1
ATHENS, Ohio– Thanks to a goal from senior Alivia Milesky with 38 seconds remaining in the second overtime period, the Ohio soccer team (3-0-0) defeated Cleveland State (1-1-1), 2-1, Friday evening at Chessa Field. The victory moved the Bobcats to 3-0 on the season.

It is the first time in program history that the Bobcats have started the season 3-0-0.

"This group has such a great culture and a commitment to each other," head coach Aaron Rodgers said. "I also really give this to the legacy of the players that came before them. The seniors last year and the seniors before them. They really helped create this culture of players wanting to do what is best for the team and not be the best on the team. When we are all pushing to make each other better, we're going to be better in turn. It goes back years. I'm really proud."

Ohio opened up the offense in the second minute with a Milesky (Plain City, Ohio) attempt that went just high of the net. The Bobcats continued the pressure with junior Jenni Santacaterina (Geneva, Ill.) firing a shot just over the net in the eighth minute.

Cleveland State got the first attempt in the 10th minute on a ball that would go just high. Milesky would continue to put pressure on CSU, recording another attempt in the 11th minute, forcing the CSU keeper to make the save.

After an attempt from senior Sydney Leckie (Medina, Ohio) in the 15th minute, the Bobcats would continue to push. The pressure paid off in the 21st minute when sophomore Abby Townsend (Powell, Ohio) passed a perfect ball to freshman Maddie Young (Cincinnati, Ohio), who buried the ball in the back of the net, giving Ohio a 1-0 lead. Young's goal was the first official goal of her career.

After the goal, CSU registered a shot in the 33rd minute, however the ball would go wide of the net. The Vikings got one more shot off by the end of the half, this one in the 43rd minute, however this ball went high as well, sending the Bobcats into the half with a 1-0 lead.

In the first half, Ohio outshot the Vikings, 5-3.

Cleveland State came out on fire in the second half, erasing the Bobcats' lead in the 53rd minute off a goal from Elena Gutlove, tying the game at 1-1 early in the second half.

The Vikings continued to push in the second half, recording another shot in the 67th minute that forced keeper sophomore Sam Wexell (Irwin, Pa.) to make a save.

Ohio began to put pressure on again with Milesky recording a shot in the 69th minute that went over the top of the net. Moments later, freshman Oliva Darrow (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) had a shot of her own, but the one would be saved by the CSU keeper.

After limited action over the next 10 minutes, Milesky registered another attempt in the 79th minute, however this one again would go high of the net, keeping the scored tied at 1-1.

Darrow registered another attempt in the 83rd minute, however CSU would see the final shot of regulation, however, neither team would score, sending the game to overtime tied at 1-1.

Neither team recorded a shot in the first overtime period, however the Bobcats came out on fire in the second overtime.

After CSU recorded an attempt in the 110thminute, Townsend and Young would register their own shots moments later. However, both balls would go just wide of the net, keeping the game at 1-1.

In the 104th minute, Townsend fired the ball to the net, forcing the CSU keeper to make a save. In the 105thminute, Young would do the game, also forcing the Vikings' keeper to make a diving save.

The Bobcats' pressure would finally pay off, when with 38 seconds remaining, Townsend would receive the throw in from Leckie, who then fed a perfect pass to Milesky, who buried it into the back of the net, securing Ohio's 2-1 victory.

Overall, Ohio outshot CSU, 15-10. Meanwhile, the Vikings recorded nine corner kicks to the Bobcats' 3.

Milesky led the way, recording five shots with two on goal and one goal. Young registered one goal on three shots with two on goal, while Townsend registered two assists on three shots with one on goal. Darrow recorded two attempts with both on goal, while Santacaterina and Leckie both recorded attempts as well.

In net, Wexell got the start, playing all 109 minutes, allowing one goal in four attempts, while making three saves.

OLEAN, NY - The University at Buffalo soccer team fell to St. Bonaventure 1-0 at the Marra Athletics Complex on Friday night. With the win, Buffalo fell to 0-2 on the season, while St. Bonaventure improved to 2-1.

The Bonnies managed just one shot in the second half but that would be all they would need as Kenzie Tarmino found Maddie Mason who headed it in off the set piece in the 76thminute for the game-winning goal.

The Bulls outshot St. Bonaventure 18-3 on the night, but none would crack the scoreboard, as Bonnies' keeper Lauren Malcolm finished the game with six saves.

In the first half, the Bulls had their first scoring chance on a shot by Taylor Caridi from the top left corner of the box but Malcolm made the save. Later, in the 40th minute, the Bulls caught the Bonnies sleeping and Adrianna VanCuyck fired one on net but it sailed just wide.

Buffalo continued to apply the pressure in the second half as Gurjeena Jandu weaved through the Bonnies' defense and ripped a bullet on net but right at Malcolm. Later, Katherine Camper got free and let one go from the top of the box but Malcolm got her hands on it yet again. The Bulls would have one last scoring chance in the 88th minute as Kara Daly fired one on net from just outside of the box but Malcolm made one last save to secure the Bonnies' victory.

"We were punished tonight for not being ready for 90 minutes," said head coach Shawn Burke. "A very lackluster first half was the difference. It doesn't matter how dominant we were in the second half, a lapse in discipline was all it took to ruin our best 45 minutes of soccer."

The Bulls will return home to UB Stadium to host Houston Baptist in their home opener on Friday, September 6, at 7 pm.

DEKALB, Ill. – Sophomore Trudy Quidzinski (Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy) netted three goals as the Northern Illinois University women's soccer team played to a 4-4 draw against Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday night in the home opener at the NIU Soccer Complex.

Quidzinski's hat trick was the first by a Huskie since Anne Mucci scored three goals against Eastern Michigan on October 16, 1998 and is just the eighth hat trick in NIU school history. Quidzinski's three goals were all part of a thrilling final 21 minutes of regulation time that including five total goals, including a tying goal by ULL in the final seconds.

"I think the key for us is putting together a full performance, which we have yet to do," said NIU head coach Julie Colhoff. "Each of the last two games we have given up a goal in the first three minutes, so that is a major piece that we have to get right. The thing we did show was the ability to comeback from down two goals, go ahead, and then unfortunately let them back in.

"Now we can never use the excuse that we aren't capable of coming back and scoring goals. Trudy (Quidzinski) with a hat trick, that is a great individual performance, (Hannah) Kroupa, getting her first goal, those are positive things. As a group there were really good moments, as well as things we definitely need to work on."

The Ragin' Cajuns opened the scoring less than three minutes into the contest as Katherine Whitman got on the end of a cross from Rachel Sutter to finish at the back post and give Louisiana-Lafayette the early lead.

Neither team scored during the remainder of the opening 45 minutes but the Ragin' Cajuns doubled their advantage less than five minutes into the second stanza. Karleen Bedre slotted a ball into the run of Telly Vunipola who scored from about eight yards out to give Louisiana-Lafayette a 2-0 lead in the 50th minute.

NIU cut the ULL lead in half in the 62nd minute as freshman Hannah Kroupa (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin) scored her first collegiate goal. Quidzinski played the ball toward Kroupa who curled a shot past a diving Mackenzie Lee in goal for the Ragin' Cajuns to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Huskies pulled even in the 69th minute when Quidzinski scored her first goal of the contest. NIU earned a free kick just about 20 yards from goal and to the left of the top of the box. The sophomore from Green Bay, Wis., fired it directly on frame, powering a shot past Lee to level the match.

In the 78th minute, Quidzinski struck again to give NIU a 3-2 lead. Dribbling toward goal, Quidzinski cut to her right near the top of the box and whistled a shot back across goal, beating Lee for her second goal of the contest.

Louisiana-Lafayette tied the game back up in the 84th minute as the Ragin' Cajuns earned a corner kick. Sutter took the corner for ULL and Gwen Mummert rose highest at the back post to power a header past NIU sophomore goalkeeper Julia Lentz (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) and tie the game, 3-3.

It took the Huskies just 91 seconds to go back in front on Quidzinski's third goal of the night. Collecting on the right wing, Quidzinski swung a ball dangerously toward the back post, over the goalkeeper and into the net before a helpless ULL defender could get a head on it, giving the Huskies a 4-3 lead in the 86th minute.

The Ragin' Cajuns evened the contest again, 4-4, with just three seconds remaining in regulation. After NIU was whistled for a foul about 30 yards from goal, the referee stopped the clock to allow the free kick to be taken. Mummert lofted the ball into the box where Alex Augustyn was the first to react and poke home a goal in a scramble inside the six-yard box to level the match.

NIU and Louisiana-Lafayette combined for just three total shots in the 20 extra minutes as neither team could find a winner in overtime.

Lentz finished with four saves between the posts for NIU while Lee also made four stops in goal for ULL.

The Huskies will return to action next weekend when they hit the road for a pair of games, beginning on Friday, September 6 at Illinois State before visiting Western Illinois on Sunday, September 8.
