Miami 2019 Schedule
OXFORD, Ohio – Miami head coach Chuck Martin is heading into his sixth year of leading the RedHawks program and in each of the last three seasons have challenged for the MAC East title with an overall 16-8 Conference record. During this three-year span, slow starts in non-conference play have hindered the RedHawks overall record as Miami finished the 2016 regular season with a 6-6 record and earned an invitation to the St. Petersburg Bowl, while 2017 witnessed Miami finish with a 5-7 overall and last year posted a 6-6 overall record to reach bowl eligibility. Getting over the .500 mark and challenging for the MAC East title are certainly goals for this year’s Miami RedHawks football program.
Miami returns 41 letterwinners and 12 starters (5 offense, 4 defense, 3 specialists) from last year’s squad that finished 6-6 overall, including a 6-2 record in the MAC for a tie for second-place in the MAC East Division. Miami has another challenging non-conference schedule this 2019 season as the RedHawks open the regular season with a road game at Iowa (Big Ten) on Aug. 31, then return home to Yager Stadium to host Tennessee Tech on Sept. 7. Miami remains within the state of Ohio with road games at Cincinnati on Sept. 14 and at Ohio State on Sept. 21.
Offensively, the biggest question will be who will replace three-year starting quarterback Gus Ragland. Leading candidates include sophomore Jackson Williamson, redshirt freshman AJ Mayer and true freshman Brett Gabbert. Also competing are sophomore Pete Lampert, redshirt freshmen Michael Bonds and Alec Bornhorst and freshman Ben Tarpey. Miami does have three starting offensive linemen returning – center Danny Godlevske, right guard Jarrett La Rubbio and right tackle Tommy Doyle – to protect the young quarterbacks. Targets include wide receivers Jack Sorenson, who had 53 receptions for 742 yards and two touchdowns last season, and Luke Mayock, who added 319 yards and three touchdowns in 2018.
Defensively, senior defensive tackle Doug Costin and junior Ben Kimpler will anchor the defensive line. Costin was named All-MAC Second Team selection last year with 52 tackles and seven sacks, while Kimpler added 37 tackles in 2018. Leading in the secondary will be senior defensive back Travion Banks, who posted 23 tackles last season, and senior defensive back Zedrick Raymond, who collected 37 tackles and seven passes defensed in 2018.
