OXFORD, Ohio – Miami University Director of Athletics David Sayler announced Wednesday that he has signed head softball coach Clarisa Crowell to a contract extension.
"It is my pleasure to announce this extension for Coach Crowell," said Sayler. "Clarisa has elevated the program's success both on the field and in the classroom and truly embodies what it means to be a RedHawk. I look forward to having Coach Crowell continue to lead Miami softball in the years to come."
In 2019, Crowell led the RedHawks to their first regular season Mid-American Conference Championship and was named MAC Coach of the Year for the first time in her career following the 35-16 season. She led Miami to its longest conference win streak in program history, winning 10-in-a-row. The 16-4 MAC record yielded the best conference win percentage in program history while tying for the most conference wins in a single season. Crowell led the 2019 squad to seven All-MAC and two All-Region selections in addition to eight student-athletes being named Academic All-MAC.
During her seven-year Miami tenure, Crowell has posted a 196-174 overall and 90-61 MAC record. She has guided the RedHawks to a MAC Tournament appearance each season, highlighted by a MAC Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament win against Notre Dame in 2016. With her at the helm, six offensive, one fielding and three conference records have been broken.
On the field, 22 student-athletes have been named All-MAC, nine MAC All-Freshman, five All-Region, three MAC All-Tournament Team, one MAC Tournament MVP and one MAC Player of the Year – the only one in program history. In addition to Miami's success on the field, Crowell also places a high importance on the student-athletes' success in the classroom and community involvement. Thirty-two athletes have been named Academic All-MAC during Crowell's time at Miami. The team's grade-point average has been at or above a 3.0 each semester of Crowell's tenure and has been above 3.30 for the past five semesters. Miami softball is consistently one of the leading teams in hours of community service as well.
"I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to continue to serve as the head coach of Miami Softball," said Crowell. "I look forward to continuing to build on the legacy and tradition of excellence that has been set by all of our former student-athletes and coaches. I firmly believe in the values set forth by our university and athletic department, and it is without any hesitation that I accept this extension.
"I would like to thank all of the student-athletes and coaches who have been a part of our program the past seven years, for all of their hard work and dedication. I would also like to thank President Crawford, David Sayler, and Breanna Robinson for entrusting me with the honor of continuing on as the leader of Miami Softball. I love Miami, I love the people of Miami, and I am very thankful for this opportunity. Love and Honor!"
