The College Sport Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Tuesday the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District Team for men’s and women’s cross country and track & field. The Mid-American Conference has six student-athletes receiving recognition for their work on the field and in the classroom.
Akron's Mackenzie Andrews, Lucy Bryan and Matt Ludwig, Ball State's Regan Lewis, and Kent State's TJ Lawson and Rachel Banks each maintained a 3.30 GPA while participating in at least 50 percent of competition. They are now on the ballot for Academic All-America accolades, which will be announced in June.
Mackenzie Andrews, Akron
Senior (Grad), Exercise Physiology, 4.00
A graduate student majoring in exercise physiology, Andrews boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA for the Zips. A 2019 second-team indoor All-America honoree in the mile, Andrews ran a school-record time of 10:01.73 to post the sixth-fastest qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 24 to earn her first-ever berth into the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where she will compete on June 6 in Austin, Texas. Andrews has established four school records this season en route to capturing five Mid-American Conference titles. She won the mile and 3,000 meters at the indoor championships, while garnering crowns in the 1,500 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase at the outdoor championships. Additionally, she was a member of the winning distance medley relay squad that ran a school-record time at the indoor championships.
Lucy Bryan, Akron
Junior, Sport Management, 3.72
A sport management major, Bryan owns a 3.72 GPA at Akron. A four-time All-America recipient in the women's pole vault, Bryan will be making her second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 6 in Austin, Texas, after recording the top-qualifying mark of 13-8.25 (4.17m) at NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 24. Ranked third in the NCAA in the pole vault in 2019, Bryan captured her second and third consecutive MAC championships in the event at the indoor and outdoor league championships, respectively. She established a school- and conference-record mark of 14-9 (4.50m) en route to winning the pole vault at the LSU Invitational on April 27.
Matt Ludwig, Akron
Senior, Biomedical Engineering, 3.89
Majoring in biomedical engineering, Ludwig maintains a 3.89 grade point at Akron. A five-time first-team All-America honoree, the 2017 NCAA Outdoor National Champion in the pole vault, Ludwig will seek earn his second career title at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 5 in Austin, Texas. He owned the top qualifying mark of 17-5 (5.31m) at NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 23. Ranked seventh in the NCAA in the pole vault in 2019, Ludwig captured his fifth consecutive Mid-American Conference championships in the event at the indoor league championships.?
Regan Lewis, Ball State
Senior, Nursing, 3.78
Lewis, who finished fourth at the 2019 MAC Outdoor Championships, earned Second Team All-America honors as a junior after placing 10th in the high jump at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. A nursing major with a 3.78 grade-point average, Lewis holds the program record in the indoor high jump at 1.81m, while her career-best outdoor leap of 1.82m is second in program history. A five-time career Academic All-MAC selection and a four-time MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete award winner, Lewis was named both the Female Athlete of the Year and the Female Outstanding Senior at Ball State's "The Chirpies" awards this spring. She also won the ceremony's Play of the Year for her effort in winning her fourth consecutive MAC high jump title in a thrilling jump off at the league's 2019 indoor championships.?
Rachel Banks, Kent State
Junior, Nursing, 3.96
A nursing major with a 3.96 cumulative grade point average, Banks earned All-MAC Second Team honors with runner-up finishes in the 800-meter run at the Mid-American Conference Championships during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Competing in her first indoor season as a Golden Flash, she ran the 10th-fastest 800m (2:10.16) in program history and was a member of the 4x400 relay team that clocked the ninth-best time in the school record book. Banks added top-10 marks in the 800m (2:07.68) and 1500m (4:33.38) during the outdoor season.?
TJ Lawson, Kent State
Junior, Sport Administration, 3.78
A sport administration and business management double-major with a 3.78 cumulative grade point average, Lawson won individual MAC titles in the heptathlon and decathlon. He will compete in the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the third straight year with a qualifying score of 7,876 that is the second-highest in conference history. Lawson was named Most Outstanding Field Performer after posting 15 points towards the Flashes' score at the MAC Outdoor Championships.?
