AVON, Ohio – No. 5 seed Northern Illinois exploded for five runs in the seventh inning and finished with a 6-3 win over No. 6 seed Ohio on Friday night at Sprenger Stadium.
The Huskies scored five in the bottom of the seventh to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 6-2 advantage. Kam Smith doubled to left and scored on Jordan Larson's single up the middle. Larson eventually scored on a passed ball. Tommy Szczasny hit a three-run homer to right field.
Ohio opened the scoring in the top of the second inning as Sebastian Fabik reached by a fielders choice and advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a ground out. The Bobcats extended the lead to 2-0 in the sixth inning as Zyon Avery doubled to right center, advanced to third on a single by Trevor Hafner and Avery scored on a wild pitch for the 2-0 advantage.
NIU scored in the bottom of the sixth as Malik Peters and Brendan Joyce singled, both were advanced on a sacrifice bunt and Peters scored on Dylan Lonteen's ground out to short to cut the Ohio lead, 2-1.
NIU starting pitcher William Anderson went five innings and allowed two runs, one earned run, on six hits. Nate Thomas came on in the sixth inning and pitched four innings, allowed only one earned run on six hits.
