AVON, Ohio – No. 4 seed Miami used timely hitting with four home runs, including two by Landon Stephens, and strong pitching by starter Sam Bachman to earn a 8-5 win over No. 3 seed Kent State in the second round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Sprenger Stadium.
Miami took the lead in the third inning as Kyle Winkler doubled and scored on Will Vogelgesan's single to left. Then Landon Stephens homered down the right field line to give the RedHawks the early 3-1 lead.
Miami scored twice in the sixth and seventh innings to open a 7-4 lead. In the sixth inning, Cole Andrews and Mackay Williams hit back-to-back home runs to right field and in the seventh inning Jordan Stephens doubled to right field as Vogelgesan and Winkler scored for the 7-4 advantage.
Landon Stephens added his second home run in the ninth inning, a solo blast to left field, to extend the lead to 8-4.
Kent State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Ben Carew walked and scored on Kian O'Brien's double down the left field line. In the third inning, catcher Michael Turner homered to left field to cut the Miami lead, 3-2. Kent State added runs in both the fifth and sixth innings with a bases loaded walk and hit-by pitch. The Golden Flashes added a sacrifice fly in the ninth for the 8-5 final.
Miami freshman starting right handed pitcher Sam Bachman had a strong start and went four and two-thirds innings with five hits and three earned runs.
