NORFOLK, Va. -- After day one of the 2019 MAC Wrestling Championships, six-time defending MAC Tournament Champion Missouri Tigers have posted the early lead as the Tigers have 127.5 team points for first place along with six wrestlers competing in Championship matches on Saturday afternoon.

Missouri has six wrestlers slated for Saturday's Championship matches, with five as No. 1 seeds -- John Erneste (133), Jaydin Eierman (141), Brock Mauller (149), Daniel Lewis (174) and Dylan Wisman (184), along with Jarrett Jacques (157) as a No. 2 seed.  For Lewis at 174, he will aim for his fourth MAC Championship title as he won the 174 weight class last season and the 165 weight class in both 2016 and 2017. Both Erneste and Eierman are both aiming for their third consecutive MAC Championship title as they both won their 2017 and 2018 weight classes.
 
Host Old Dominion has four Monarchs in Championship matches tomorrow.  Representing Old Dominion are No. 1 seeds Michael McGee (125) and Larry Early (157), No. 2 seed Kevin Budock (149) and No. 4 seed Tim Young (197).  McGee is aiming for his second consecutive MAC Championship title at the 125 weight class. 

Buffalo also has four wrestlers in Championship matches.  Representing the Bulls are No. 2 seed Troy Keller (165) and No. 3 seed's Derek Spann (133), Bryan Lantry (141) and Brett Perry (197).

Central Michigan has two wrestlers advancing to Championship matches with No. 1 seed Matt Stencel (285) and No. 2 seed Drew Hildebrandt (125).  Stencil is aiming for his second consecutive MAC Championship title after winning last year's weight class. 

Also competing in Saturday's Championship matches are Northern Illinois' No. 2 seed Brit Wilson (174), Kent State's No. 3 seed Andrew McNally (184), Ohio's No. 4 seed Colt Yinger (165) and SIU Edwardsville's No. 6 seed Colton McKiernan (285). 

All eight MAC wrestling programs have at least one wrestler competing in a Championship match on Sunday.

Buffalo is ranked second with 94.5 team points, while Old Dominion is third with 92.5 team points. Central Michigan ranks fourth with 82.5 points, while Ohio is fifth with 76.0 points and Northern Illinois is sixth with 71.0 team points.  SIU Edwardsville has 59.5 points and Kent State has 56.5 team points. 

Missouri entered the MAC Wrestling Championships as the No. 5 ranked team in the nation with a 16-1 overall record, including 7-0 within the MAC. Missouri is seeking its seventh consecutive MAC Wrestling Championship.

The 2019 MAC Wrestling Championships conclude on Saturday, March 9 beginning at Noon ET from the Ted Constant Convocation Center on the campus of Old Dominion University. Saturday's schedule begins with consolation semifinals at Noon and seventh place matches at 1:05 pm, followed by Championship Finals at 2:00 pm ET.

Buffalo:
Four Bulls Advance to Finals, Buffalo in Second After Opening Day of MAC Championships


NORFOLK, VA – It was a successful start to the Mid-American Conference Championships for the University at Buffalo as four Bulls advanced to Saturday's finals. Derek Spann, Bryan Lantry, Troy Keller and Brett Perry will all have a shot at a MAC title on Saturday. As a team, the Bulls sit in second place following the first day at Old Dominion University. Spann advanced to the finals of the 133-lb. bracket by winning both of his bouts on the day. He cruised in his first match, winning an 11-2 decision over Old Dominion's Trevon Majette. Spann had a tougher test in the semifinals, but was able to get by Ohio's Mario Guillen, 6-4. A second-period reversal by Spann was the difference in the match. Full Story...

Central Michigan:
Stencel, Hildebrandt Earn Title Shots

NORFOLK, Va. – Two Central Michigan wrestlers will wrestle for Mid-American Conference titles on Saturday at the Mid-American Conference Championships at Old Dominion's Ted Constant Convocation Center. Drew Hildebrandt (125 pounds) and Matt Stencel (285), both sophomores, punched their ticket to the championship match in their respective weight classes by finishing 2-0 on Friday on Day 1 of the Championships.
 
Six other Chippewas – Deven Perez (133), Drew Marten (141), Dresden Simon (149), Logan Parks (157), Collin Lieber (174) and Jordan Atienza (184) – are in the consolation bracket and each could finish as high as third place. Two more Chippewas, Bret Fedewa (165) and Landon Pelham (197), will wrestle for seventh place on Saturday.  Full Story...

Kent State:
Flashes Collect 3 Quarterfinal Pins at MAC Championships

NORFOLK, Va. - Kent State sophomore Andrew McNally (184) will be wrestling for a Mid-American Conference title Saturday after going 2-0 on the opening day of the 2019 MAC Championships.  McNally was one of three Golden Flashes to record a quarterfinal round pin Friday inside Old Dominion's Ted Constant Center. Sophomore 141-pounder Cory Simpson was the only No. 7 seed in the tournament to defeat a No. 2 seed.  Simpson pinned Ohio's Cam Kelly in 25 seconds.  Simpson dropped his semifinal bout to Buffalo's Bryan Lantry 4-0.  Full Story...

Missouri:
Tigers Lead MAC Championships After Day One

NORFOLK, Va. –  Fifth-ranked Mizzou Wrestling is in first place at the Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships after sending six of 10 wrestlers to the finals after day one of competition Friday at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on the campus of Old Dominion. Mizzou has 127.5 total team points, well ahead of second-place Buffalo (94.5).

Advancing to tomorrow's finals are: RS senior John Erneste – 133; RS junior Jaydin Eierman – 141; Freshman Brock Mauller – 149; Freshman Jarrett Jacques – 157; RS senior Daniel Lewis – 174; RS junior Dylan Wisman – 184.  In the first session, Mizzou was dominant as it sent all 10 wrestlers to the semifinals with a perfect 10-0 mark in the first round. Of the 10 wins, seven came via a bonus-point wins with three pins, three technical falls and a major decision at heavyweight. Mizzou's seven No. 1 seeds combined for those six of the bonus point wins, including pins from John Erneste (133), Connor Flynn (165) and Daniel Lewis (174). Northern Illinois:
Huskies Solid In Day One

NORFOLK, Va. – The Northern Illinois University wrestling team sits in sixth place and seven Huskies have advanced to day two following its performance on the first day of the 2019 Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships at the Ted Constant Convocation Center Friday. Brit Wilson (Mexico, Mo./Mexico) cruised through his two matches on the day, opening with a 6-1 victory over SIUE's Kevin Gschwendter in his first match of the day at 174. He then scored a 12-4 maj. dec. victory over host Old Dominion's Luke Drugac to advance to the finals. Wilson will face Missouri's Daniel Lewis. Full Story...

Ohio:
Ohio Wrestling's Yinger Clinches Spot In Title Bout 

NORFOLK, Va. -- Freshman Colt Yinger (Nelsonville, Ohio) earned a spot in the title bout at 165 pounds to highlight the opening day of the 2019 Mid-American Conference Championships today at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. Yinger topped Kent State fifth-year senior Isaac Bast with a 3-2 win by decision in the quarterfinals, then upset No. 1-seeded Missouri redshirt junior Connor Flynn in the semifinals with a 5-4 win by decision. Flynn was ranked 13th in the nation according to the latest NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings. Yinger will wrestle Buffalo junior Troy Keller for the MAC title. He can claim the MAC's lone qualifier at 165 to the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships with a win.  Full Story...

Old Dominion:
Monarchs Advance Four to MAC Finals; ODU in Third

NORFOLK, Va. – Michael McGee (125), Kevin Budock (149), Larry Early (157) and Tim Young (197) of ODU wrestling have advanced to the 2019 MAC Wrestling Championships. McGee and Early have secured spots to the NCAA Championships with their semifinal wins. With a victory in the finals, Budock and Young will punch tickets to the NCAA Championships in Pittsburgh. Making his second straight MAC Final appearance, McGee will face Drew Hildebrandt of CMU in the 125-pound final. Last year, McGee won his final in overtime and was named MAC Freshman of the Year. He opened his evening with a 18-0 win over SIUE's Gage Datlovsky. After not facing Dack Punke in the regular season, McGee took down the Missouri athlete 7-1 in the semifinals.  Full Story...

SIU Edwardsville:
McKiernan Advances to MAC Finals

NORFOLK, Va. – SIUE freshman Colton McKiernan used an overtime fall over Missouri's Zach Elam to move into the Mid-American Conference Championships heavyweight finals at the Ted Constant Convocation Center Friday. With his advancement into the finals and the MAC's four automatic spots at heavyweight, McKiernan has guaranteed himself a spot at the NCAA Championships later this month in Pittsburgh, Pa. McKiernan was a No. 6 seed at the MAC Championships after winning 19 matches during the regular season. He first upset Buffalo's Jake Gunning, a former MAC champion, in the opening round with a 5-3 victory. Gunning was ranked No. 16 nationally (coaches rank) and 15th (RPI). Full Story...
