Akron (16-14, 7-11 MAC)
The Zips will compete at the WBI for the second time in program history, will make its seventh postseason appearance, and its first since the Zips WNIT appearance in 2016. As the 2018-19 campaign came to a close, the Zips finished with a 16-14 overall record and went 7-11 in Mid-American Conference play. Redshirt senior Megan Sefcik was named to the Mid-American Conference All-MAC Second Team. In the Zips first season under the guidance of first-year head coach Melissa Jackson, UA improved by seven wins from last season and captured four more conference victories. The Akron team also became the just eighth team in Akron program history to win at least 16 games in a season and the seventh Zips squad to do so in the Division I era.
Buffalo (23-9, 12-6 MAC)
Buffalo enters the tournament with a 23-9 record. UB defeated Ohio 77-61 on Saturday night in Cleveland to win their second MAC title in three years. It is the third NCAA appearance for the Bulls in three years. The Bulls got the program’s first at-large big last season and made the most of it, advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history with wins over South Florida and Florida State. UB also made the tournament as an automatic bid in 2016. Friday’s game will mark the second ever meeting between UB and Rutgers, with Rutgers winning the only meeting back in 1998.
Central Michigan (25-7, 15-3 MAC)
It is CMU’s second-consecutive trip to the Big Dance and the fifth in program history. The Chippewas last went to the tournament in back-to-back years in 1983 and ‘84. They also went in 2013. This is the program’s first at-large bid; the first four came as a result of winning the MAC Tournament championship. Last season, the Chippewas, seeded 11th in their regional, reached the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in program history, knocking off sixth-seeded LSU and then third-seeded Ohio State for the first two NCAA Tourney wins in program history.
Kent State (19-12, 11-7 MAC)
The Golden Flashes will be making their fifth WNIT appearance, including the second under the leadership of third-year head coach Todd Starkey. Kent State lost to eventual champion Michigan, 67-60, in the opening round of the 2017 tournament.
Miami (23-8, 13-5 MAC)
Miami finished the season with a 23-8 overall record and a 13-5 conference record. The RedHawks return to the WNIT for the second-consecutive season. Miami reached 20 wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 1980’s and put together an 11-game win streak, matching the fifth-longest win streak in program history. The RedHawks earned the No. 3 seed in the MAC Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland last week. After a first-round bye, Miami beat Toledo by a 72-54 margin in the Quarterfinals before falling to second-seeded Ohio in the Semifinals.
Ohio (27-5, 14-4 MAC)
The Bobcats are making an appearance in the WNIT for the second time in program history, and Ohio is 2-2 in the tournament all-time. Ohio made the WNIT in 2016, taking down Marshall and Virginia Tech at home before falling to Temple on the road in the round of 16. Ohio also made the tournament in 2017, falling to Penn State. This will be the fourth all-time meeting between Ohio and High Point, with the Bobcats leading the series, 3-0. Ohio last played High Point in 2017, with Ohio defeating the Panthers, 64-61. Ohio is 27-5 and is No. 34 in the latest RPI. The Bobcats made it to the Mid-American Conference Championship Game and won the MAC East regular season crown after going 14-4 during conference play.
Toledo (20-11, 11-7 MAC)
Toledo will be appearing in the Postseason WNIT for a seventh time under 11th-year head coach Tricia Cullop. A season ago, the Rockets advanced to the second round of the Postseason WNIT with a 64-50 home victory against Horizon League member Wright State (March 16). UT’s season came to an end with a 68-66 road setback at Big Ten member Michigan State (March 19). Toledo enters the post-season with a 20-11 overall record and an 11-7 league mark to finish second in the MAC West Division.
