MUNCIE - Ball State started its home opener in the best way possible, posting a team school record effort on the vault en route to a dual meet win over Western Michigan on Sunday.
All six vault performances were 9.775 or better, as BSU totaled the record of 49.175. Marissa Nychykand Stephanie Schweikert, a pair of freshmen competing in Worthen Arena for the first time, both landed 9.875 on vault.
"We wanted to come out and do solid gymnastics, and we knew if we did that we would be able to beat Western," head coach Joanna Saleem said. "Breaking the school record was the icing on the cake for that."

CHICAGO (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team traveled to Chicago Sunday, Feb. 3, for a matchup with the University of Illinois-Chicago, but came up short, 195.000-193.075.
On bars, EMU was led by sophomore Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio.-Bishop Fenwick) score of 9.800, good for second. Fellow sophomore Jada Rondeau (Norwood Young America, Minn.-Central) followed up tied for third with 9.750.
Moving to the second rotation, Eastern held the first and second-place spots as junior Allie Smith (Telford, Pa.-Souderton) scored a personal-best 9.875, claiming first, and senior Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill.-Sacred Heart Classical Center) placed second with 9.750. Senior Ciara Gresham (Shiloh, Ill.-Belleville) also chipped in a score of 9.725, finishing sixth.
Freshman Caitlin Satler (Orland, Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) took over floor for EMU, tying for third with a new personal-best of 9.825. It is thes third consecutive meet she has hit a career-high on either beam or floor. Rondeau also tied for third with a 9.825, while Smith and Gresham both posted 9.700s.
The Eagles finished on beam as Satler scored a 9.775, tying for first. Hultgren, junior Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill-Carl Sandburg) and sophomore Bri Price (Kings Mountain, N.C.-Homeschool) posted 9.625s, to tie for sixth.
Eastern Michigan returns home to the Convocation Center Friday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. to take on the Broncos of Western Michigan University in a Mid-American Conference showdown. The action will be broadcast on Eagle All-Access
