Kent State 12, Michigan State 2
Boxscore
CONWAY, S.C. – The Kent State University baseball team (1-5) notched its first win of the 2019 season, topping Michigan State (1-6), 12-2 in the first ever meeting between the two schools. Redshirt sophomore Ben Carew went 3-for-5 with a double, tallying five RBIs on the day.

Senior John Schreiber earned the win on the mound, tossing 5.0 innings, striking out three and allowing only three hits and two walks. Freshman Luke Albright added 4.0 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and fanning three.

"We got a solid start from John Schreiber," head coach Jeff Duncan said. "I thought he pitched a respectable game and mixed his pitches well. He kept us in the game and controlled the running game really well, especially when Michigan State was ahead early. He had a really great pickoff move and caught a couple runners."

Kent State fell behind 2-0 early in the top of the second, but the Flashes responded with a big third and fourth inning to secure the win. After the second inning, the Flashes allowed only three runners on base the rest of the game, two of which were picked off on the base paths.

"We played great defense behind our pitchers today," Duncan added. "Luke Albright threw well in relief. He threw strikes and made his pitches, and did great in doing his job to close the game."

In the bottom of the third, junior Patrick Ferguson and senior Pete Schuler led off the half inning with walks and senior Josh Hollander advanced them on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Collin Mathews loaded the bases, reaching on a drop third strike and Carew cleared the bases with a three-run double. The Flashes loaded the bases again for sophomore Greg Lewandoski to add two runs on a single.

Senior Pavin Parks led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and advanced on a single from Ferguson. Schuler notched the sixth run of the game, scoring Parks on a single to left field. Hollander loaded the bases with a single, and Ferguson scored on a wild pitch. Carew followed with a single up the middle, tallying his fourth and fifth RBI of the game, and Touchette knocked in the last run of the inning on a single to center field.

The Flashes added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to bring the final score to 12-2.

The Kent State offense recorded ten hits from six Flashes, including two doubles. Carew led with three hits, and Ferguson, Parks and Schuler added two hits apiece. Lewandoski, senior Schuler and Touchette also contributed multi-RBI games in the win.

"Offensively, we took our walks. The two big innings started with walks," Duncan explained. "Ferguson and Schuler's lead off walks followed by the sac bunt by Hollander and the big timely hit from Carew got us going. From there we really took off. We had effective offense in every facet – moving on the bases and showing bunt – which was really what we want to see."

Next up, the Flashes will travel to Charleston, S.C. to face Charleston Southern on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 6:00 p.m.

BEAUMONT, Texas – The 2019 Lamar Cardinal Baseball Classic ended the same way it started, with a Central Michigan victory.

The Chippewas defeated Lamar, 10-6, on Sunday to earn their sixth straight victory and finish the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.

"I'm extremely pleased with our energy and enthusiasm today," first-year CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "It's not easy to win four games on a weekend and our team came out determined today."

CMU outscored its four opponents, 41-13, on the weekend in improving to 6-2. The Chippewas head to Kissimmee, Fla. for Spring Break during which they will play eight games in nine days, beginning with a game against Hofstra on Saturday, March 2 (noon).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Jacob Crum's three-run homer in the second inning gave the Chippewas a 3-0 lead they would never relinquish. It was Crum's second homer in as many games. He hit a grand slam in a 12-3 victory over Prairie View A&M on Saturday.

The Chippewas added two runs in the fourth inning on a Zach Heeke RBI groundout and Griffin Lockwood-Powell's bases-loaded walk, and then tacked on three more in the fifth. Zavier Warren and Chase Rollin both drove in runs with groundouts, and Heeke drove in a run with an infield single.

The Chippewas led, 8-2, after 4 ½ innings and the lead proved to be plenty for starter Zach Kohn and the bullpen.

AT THE PLATE
Jason Sullivan had three hits including a double to lead the Chippewas at the plate, Warren homered and Zach Gilles and Evan Kratt had two hits apiece.

ON THE MOUND
Kohn improved to 2-0 by going five innings for the win. He surrendered four runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out two.

Cameron Miller, Ian Leatherman and Logan Buczkowski worked in relief for CMU.

NEXT
It was CMU's second-consecutive weekend road trip in which it played four games in three days. The Chippewas split four games in their season-opening series last week in Troy, Ala.

"More than anything, we need to catch up on sleep, time in the classroom and work hard in the weight room this week," Bischel said. "It's exciting to know that we have a few days of practice to work in all areas this week.

"We still have a lot of room to improve offensively, but our hitting approach was outstanding at time this weekend, which helped us maximize our hits."

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Ball State baseball team split a pair of games Sunday at Alabama. The Cardinals held off Alabama in the conclusion of Saturday's game, 8-5, but then fell in the rubber game, 6-0.

"I thought our guys competed well all weekend," Ball State head coach Rich Maloney said. "We played an outstanding game in our victory which took a total team effort."

Ball State (2-5) and Alabama (5-2) began the day by wrapping up the second game of the series. That game was halted in the bottom of the seventh inning yesterday due to rain and poor field conditions. The Cardinals were ahead 7-4 at that point keyed by a four-run second inning. After the Crimson Tide cut the deficit to one run in the fifth, Ball State responded with two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Redshirt freshman Noah Navarro brought in one run with a sacrifice fly. Catcher Chase Sebby then added an RBI double, plating Aaron Simpson who had doubled earlier in the inning.

Murray State got solo home runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to cut the lead to 12-3, but the RedHawks got the two runs back in the top of the ninth when junior shortstop Will Vogelgesang singled home Tejada and Harrigan to make it 14-3. The Racers hit one final solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to complete the scoring.

A single from Andrews brought home Tejada, while the shortstop misplayed the relay throw, allowing Stephens to score and make it 3-0.

The Racers led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run. That seemed to get their bats going, as a couple more hits and a balk brought home two more runs and tied the score at three.
The RedHawks regained the advantage at 4-3 in the top of the seventh when Tejada scored on a balk.

Murray State took its first lead of the day in the bottom of the seventh with a two out single that scored two. In the bottom of the eighth it scored two runs on a sac fly to build a 7-4 advantage.
Miami did not give up in the top of the ninth. Stolze led off by being hit by a pitch. Redshirt freshman Reid Norberg and Tejada followed by drawing walks to load the bases with no one out. After the Racers got a strikeout, Harrigan's fielder's choice groundout allowed Stolze to score and make it 7-5. Unfortunately that would be all the 'Hawks could get as Murray State recorded the final out to secure the victory.

Harrigan and Andrews each had an RBI in the nightcap, while Tejada was 1-for-4 with two runs scored.

Miami concludes its series against Murray State on Monday with a single game. First pitch is at 1 p.m. (EST).
