Championship Central
KENT, Ohio - With six events complete on the women's side and four on the men's, Central Michigan and Akron respectively stand on top of the 2019 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship leader board.
History was made in the women's pentathlon as Toledo's Atalia Lima became the first Rocket to win the event.The sophomore collected 3,542 points across five-events to claim the title. Eastern Michigan's Morgan Iverson took second with 3,533 points and Central Michigan's Alexandria Robinson finished third with 3,462 points.
The first title of the day went to Bowling Green's Aliyah Gustafson in the women's weight throw. The senior threw 20.5m (67-03.25). Ohio's Gaza Odunaiya claimed second with a toss of 20.15m (66-01.5) and Buffalo's Jaskiran Dhaliwall took third at 19.96m (65-06.0).
In the men's weight throw, Kent State's Jake Wickey successfully defended his title from a year ago with a throw of 20.62m (67-08.00). Buffalo's Samuel Wray and Central Michigan's Logan Targgart completed the top-3 with respectful throws of 19.65m (64-05.75) and 19.60m (64-03.75).
Central Michigan's Nadia Williams set a Kent State Field House record on her way to claiming the women's long jump title with a leap of 6.30m (20-08.0). Her teammate, Janelle Perry, finished second at 6.20m (20-04.25). Eastern Michigan's Allyson Goff took third with a mark of 6.02m (19-09.0).
Akron's Jordan Latimer successfully defended his men's long jump title from a year ago with a leap of 7.73m (25-04.50). Kent State's Samory Fraga placed second (7.69m/25-02.75) and Akron's Hesham Eldesouky completed the top-3 (7.48m/24-06.05)
Records continued to fall later in the evening with Akron's Lucy Bryan setting a MAC Meet Record in the women's pole vault. The junior cleared 4.43m (14-06.25) to defend her title from the outdoor season. Central Michigan's Rebekah Petty registered a second-place finish (4.08m/13-04.50) and Akron's Abby Helminiak placed third (3.98m/13-00.75).
Toledo picked up their second individual title of the meet with Athena Welsh's 16:33.55 performance in the women's 5000m. CMU's Megan O'Neil crossed second in 16:37.32 and Eastern Michigan's Sydney Meyers followed in third at 16:38.37.
Akron's Tevin Brown took the men's 5000m title with a time of 14:35.04. EMU's Austin Wicker grabbed silver at 14:37.54 and Buffalo's Caleb Covell took bronze in 14:39.40.
For the first time since 2005, Akron took the women's distance medley relay (DMR) crown. The team of Lindsey Scranton, Iman Batiste, Victoria Stachowski and Mackenzie Andrews finished in 11:37.61. Eastern Michigan took second in 11:45.21 and Miami crossed third in 11:46.63.
Solomon Costa, Treston White, Derek Jones, Owen Day led Eastern Michigan to another men's DMR title. The quad posted a time of 10:04.71. Akron crossed second at 10:06.82 and Buffalo followed in third at 10:08.00.
Through four events in the men’s heptathlon, Kent State's TJ Lawson leads the field with 3224 points. Eastern Michigan's Skyler Lester follows in second with 3094 andAkron's Kamar Majid rounds out the top three with 2969 points.
Action continues tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. with the men's heptathlon 60m hurdles. Field events are set to start at 12:00 p.m. and the finals of all running events begin at 1:15 p.m.
