Bowling Green // BG Opener
Bowling Green, Ohio – Junior Ryen Draper shattered her own school record in the 300 and the Falcons won seven events to begin the 2019-20 indoor track and field season in the BG Opener Friday night. Draper's time of 39.00 was almost a full second faster than the school record time of 39.88 she set in 2017.

Cleveland State and Mid-American Conference rival Miami (Ohio) competed at the meet, hosted by BGSU in Perry Field House.

THE 300
  • Ryen Draper made an early statement by racing to victory in the 300 with a time of 39.00. She had set the school record of 39.88 and was the only Falcon in program history to run the distance in less than 40 seconds.
  • But that wasn't all. Sophomore Iyanna Ross ran 39.80, a time that would have been the school record had Draper not been competing.
KAILA BUTLER KEEPS DOING BIG THINGS
  • Senior Kaila Butler opened her final indoor season with a bang, setting a new personal best in the weight throw. Butler, who placed fourth in the MAC in the event a year ago, hit a MAC automatic qualifying distance of 19.78m (64-feet-10.75). She easily won the weight throw with a distance that has only been beaten by three others in program history.
NEW NAMES ATOP THE LEADERBOARD
  • Bowling Green picked up individual event victories from two freshmen as well as earning a victory in the 1600 relay with a team that featured freshmen for half of the race.
  • Redshirt freshman Katie Seyfang won the shot put with a distance of 14.34m (47-0.75).
  • True freshman Hannah Shoemaker won the 200 in 26.10 seconds.
  • Shoemaker and fellow true freshman Anna Roach combined with veterans Savannah Nevels and Iyanna Ross to win the final event of the night, the 1600 relay, in 4:04.32.
OTHER WINNERS
  • Redshirt sophomore Brianna Richard set an indoor personal best in the long jump at 5.60m (18-4.5) to win the event.
  • Junior Savannah Nevels set a personal best in the 60 to win the finals in 7.64 seconds. She had posted a time of 7.72 seconds in the prelims and entered final seeded second.
MORE NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
  • Sophomore Ayanna Burrell posted an indoor personal best distance in the triple jump of 11.64m (38-2.25). That was just one centimeter shy of winning the event.
  • Sophomore Lauren Jackson trimmed almost five seconds off of her indoor personal best in the 800, placing third in 2:23.45.
UP NEXT
  • BGSU has more than a month off before competing in the Wolverine Invitational Jan. 11, hosted by Michigan.
  • The Falcons will then return home to host Toledo in a dual meet Jan. 17.

Buffalo // Youngstown Icebreaker
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The University at Buffalo track and field team opened up their 2019-20 indoor season on Friday afternoon as they competed in the Youngstown Ice Breaker hosted by Youngstown State University.

The day was highlighted by three Bulls receiving automatic MAC qualifying scores. In the weight throw, senior Sam Wray won the event with a score of 18.91 meters, which is fourth in UB's all-time list in the event. Wray now holds the third and fourth top scores in school history as he scored a 19.65 meters in the 2018-19 indoor season.

Also receiving an automatic bid to the MAC Championships was Anthony Clark in the 60 meter hurdles as he finished in a time of 8.06. This time ties Mike Morgan (2015) for fifth on UB's all-time list.

To top the day off, Nisa Raqib stampeded her way to a first place finish in the triple jump with a score of 12.77 meters. This score also stampeded to the top of the UB all-time records list as she has now topped a 16 year record of 12.75 meters held by Biaunca McFarland (2003). Raqib has also qualified for the MAC Championships in the first meet of the season.

Jeremy Lissade made the finals for the 60 meter dash and finished in 6.92, good for second place. Lissade is now in a four-way tie for ninth place on UB's all-time list with Dan Schichtel (2010), Joshua Gali (2017) and Roy Richards (2004).

In the 200 meter dash, Priscilla Faa cracked in the top-10 in UB's record books as she had a personal record in the event with a time of 25.21.

Katriel Perrier ran a strong 400 meter dash as she finished in ninth place in a time of 57.92.

Earnie Burapan won the pole vault with a score of 12-02.50/3.72 meters. Burapan tied her record from last season for eighth on the all-time UB list.

In the women's 5000 meter run, the Bulls had three runners finish in the top-10. Riley Jones finished in second place in 17:48.94 with Dana Lynch (fifth place – 18:22.75) and Meghan LaTuso (sixth place – 18:24.95) right behind. All three of the runners each earned their personal-bests in the event with Jones beating her previous time by nearly 20 seconds.

"This was a solid opener for both the men's and women's team," Head Coach Vicki Mitchell said. "We had a lot of newcomers to the program competing in their first collegiate meet, and many returners open with personal best. We will use this meet to evaluate our training and preparation over the next 4 weeks to our next meet."

The Bulls next meet will be on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Ann Arbor, Mich. as they will compete in the Wolverine Invite, hosted by the University of Michigan.

Central Michigan // GVSU Holiday Open
ALLENDALE, Mich. – One meet, two program records, plenty of placers, and a good start for Central Michigan for the indoor track & field season.

CMU's Nadia Williams broke her own record in the women's long jump and Quiara Wheeler broke the Chippewas women's standard in the weight throw on Friday as the Chippewas opened the season at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open at the GVSU's Kelly Family Sports Center.

"They both looked really good," said Jenny Swieton, CMU director of track & field/cross country. "I think Nadia has looked the best she's ever looked as far as her approach and the way she finishes. She obviously came together last year, but now it's just being consistent, and fine tuning the little things.

"Quiara is getting so much stronger. She did really well in the weight throw last year. But it's the same thing (as Nadia), it's starting to come together. For her, all three of her throws were farther than the program record. It wasn't just one good throw, it was consistently throwing really well.

"I think that everybody competed well at some point. Even if someone had an off race in one event, they came back in the next one and really put it out there. There were people who didn't feel awesome, but still gave everything they had. Everybody walked away having learned something or gaining something from the experience, regardless of if it was a personal best or not."

Results
Williams' long jump of 21 feet 1 ¼ inches was good for first place as she eclipsed her previous mark of 21-1/2. The senior from Mount Horeb, Wis., an All-American both indoors and outdoors last season, also won the 200-meter dash on Friday with a time of 24.71 seconds.

Wheeler finished third with a throw of 64-4 ½. She broke Charity Sunderman's program record of 62-6.

CMU also got a first-place finish, on the men's side, from senior Logan Targgart in the weight throw. His winning throw was 69-5 ¼. CMU's Connor Covert placed sixth, 57 feet 6 ½ inches.
