OXFORD, Ohio -- The No.1 Kent State University field hockey team defeated No. 5 Longwood, 2-1, in the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinal Friday afternoon at the Miami Field Hockey Complex to advance to the championship game.
The first half featured a defensive battle between the two teams as neither team could capitalize on a goal. Kent State's defense limited the Lancers to only fire off one shot in the first half.
The game remained scoreless until the third period as senior Laila Richter got the Flashes on the board with a goal from the top of the circle, following a foul.
Six minutes later, Richter scored her second goal of the day off a penalty stroke that extended Kent State's lead to 2-0 with much of the fourth period remaining to play.
Longwood would score in the 54th-minute of the game, but Kent State would hold on for the 2-1 victory.
The Flashes dominated the Lancers offensively, holding a 21-7 advantage in shot attempts on the day, while also leading in penalty corners, 10-2. In goal, Azure Fernsler and Mary Crumlish each recorded a save.
Kent State will compete in the Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship against the winner of the Miami vs. Appalachian State game Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. in Oxford, Ohio. The Flashes will look to reclaim the tournament title after falling to Miami in last year's championship game, 5-3.
