MUNCIE, Ind. - Senior Michelle Shampton scored the winning goal Friday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex in the final minute of action, pushing Ball State past Appalachian State by a score of 1-0. Shampton's goal came off of the assist from teammate junior Jenna McKune, it was Shampton's fifth goal of the season and 13th for her career.

It was a defensive battle for 59 minutes of action. Both teams struggled offensively despite 10 shot opportunities from the Cardinals and 12 from the Mountaineers. Some key saves from the Ball State goalies, senior Alison McMullen and freshman Wietske Overdijkink helped keep Appalachian State scoreless.

Prior to the contest the Cardinals paid tribute to their six seniors: Hannah Bohn, Arantxa Rosainz Caloca, Haley Jolly, McMullen, Hillary Scott and Shampton.

"This is a class who has left its mark on Ball State Field hockey forever," Ball State head field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "They transformed the way the team works and prepares because they bought into our coaching staff's vision. They have been hungry to bring Ball State back to national prominence, and they have put action behind it. I am blessed to have led them for 2 years, and better for the time I have spent with them. This year has been really fun, because we have grown so close as a team. We hope to honor this group and keep battling as long as we can into November!"

Ball State will now await its fate in the upcoming 2019 Mid-American Conference Tournament next week in Oxford, Ohio on the campus of Miami University. The tournament begins Wednesday and will end with the championship contest on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET.
