YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team survived a late scare to defeat Southeast Missouri State University, 69-64, Tuesday, Nov. 19, inside the Convocation Center.
Freshman Aaliyah Stanley (Boynton Beach, Fla.-Oxbridge Academy) led the Eagles (2-2) with a career-high 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting and set a personal-best by knocking down five of her nine three-point attempts. She also pulled down four rebounds and recorded two steals for the third consecutive game.
Redshirt junior Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East) added nine points, two boards, and a team-best five assists, while sophomore Natalia Pineda (Miami, Fla.-John A. Ferguson) tallied nine points off the bench to go with four rebounds and a pair of helpers. Additionally, sophomore Jenna Annecchiarico (Baldwin, N.Y.-Baldwin) notched seven points, four boards, three assists, two steals, and a block, while junior Autumn Hudson (Richwood, Ohio-North Union) logged six bench points, a block, and a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Eagles finished 37.9 percent (25-of-66) from the floor, which was slightly better than SEMO's (3-1) 35.3 percent (24-of-68) efficiency. Although the Redhawks out-rebounded EMU, 50-40, the Green and White recorded more assists (11-4), bench points (17-11), points off turnovers (15-7), and steals (6-3).
The Redhawks knocked down a triple to open the scoring, but the Eagles gained control of the contest on the strength of an 11-0 run lasting more than six minutes to jump ahead, 11-3, with 3:16 to go in the first quarter. After the visitors cut the deficit to two later in the frame, Cardwell knocked down a corner three to cap a 7-0 EMU run and put the Green and White in front, 16-9, with 36 seconds left in the opening quarter.
Leading 21-14 early in the second period, the Eagles were ahead by as many as 16 during the opening half. In all, Stanley scored EMU's final 14 points of the opening half, hitting four consecutive triples as the hosts pulled away, 35-21, heading into the locker room.
Stanley added another triple early in the third frame, but the Redhawks managed to cut the margin to six by the end of the third quarter. With EMU holding a 53-51 edge near the midway point of the fourth period, Annecchiarico and sophomore Kiara Johnson (Buffalo, N.Y.-Cardinal O'Hara) nailed back-to-back layups to make it a 57-51 contest with 4:57 left in regulation.
SEMO clawed its way back within two points, but Pineda buried a corner three to give EMU a two-possession lead, 62-57, with 1:34 remaining in the fourth. Hudson added a layup with just over a minute on the clock, as the Eagles hit free throws the rest of the way to seal a 69-64 win over the previously unbeaten Redhawks.
