The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team, after closing the regular season with a pair of shutout wins, begins Mid-American Conference Tournament action this week. For the second time in a four-day span, head coach Eric Nichols and the Falcons welcome Northern Illinois University to Cochrane Stadium. BGSU will battle the Huskies in MAC Tournament quarterfinal-round action on Tuesday (Nov. 12). First touch is set for 5:00 p.m., and admission is free. The BGSU-NIU survivor will advance to Friday's (Nov. 15) semifinal round. The fourth-seeded Falcons or the fifth-seeded Huskies will face the top-seeded University of Akron in the semis.
NIU brings a 7-9-1 overall record into Tuesday's quarterfinal. Senior Jan Maertins (Rheinfelden, Germany/Marquette) and sophomore Nick Markanich (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) have each scored six goals to lead the Huskies this season. Maertins has tallied 15 points and is one of four Huskies to have reached double figures in points this year. Nick Markanich and his twin brother Anthony Markanich (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) each have 14 points while junior Alex Welch (Carmarthen, Wales/King's College Madrid) has posted 13 points.
