MAC COUNCIL OF STUDENT ATHLETES CELEBRATE DIVERSITY & INCLUSION WEEK WITH ANTI-BULLYING THEME THROUGH OCTOBER 12TH
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference (MAC) Council of Student Athletes (COSA) are celebrating Diversity & Inclusion Week with an anti-bullying theme through Saturday, Oct. 12th.
Across MAC campuses this week, all 12 institutions have created specific campus plans to support the MAC Diversity & Inclusion Week with the focus this year on anti-bullying within their own campus community. This is just another example of MAC student-athletes providing leadership and attention to anti-bullying and #TakingMACtion on their respective campus.
“I continue to be impressed with the leadership of our student-athletes and the attention they are bringing to our diversity and inclusion initiative and specifically anti-bullying,” said MAC Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher. “Our student-athletes spoke and the leadership from within our Council of Student Athletes and Student Athlete Advisory Committee’s went into action to work on specific events across each campus to bring attention to this important initiative.”
Akron: Akron student-athletes are supporting anti-bullying by wearing orange wristbands, providing social media posts and a poster campaign to ‘STOMP out Bullying’, guest speakers for SAAC and elementary school visits.
Ball State: Ball State student-athletes are encouraged to wear orange throughout the week, will produce a PSA promoting anti-bullying at sporting events all week, provide written notes on campus with words of encouragement and uplifting quotes and attend a local elementary school and read to students on anti-bullying.
Bowling Green: Bowling Green student-athletes posted social media messages and quotes for anti-bullying and to emphasize kindness, acceptance and inclusion. They also hosted a ‘Breakfast Buddies’ event and attended a local elementary school to read to youth regarding anti-bullying.
Buffalo: Bulls student-athletes are hosting a table on campus and posting encouraging messages regarding anti-bullying. Buffalo also visited local elementary schools to spread the message of anti-bullying.
Central Michigan: Central Michigan student-athletes welcomed guest speakers on campus and visited local elementary schools – Garniard Elementary, Pullen Elementary, Vowles Elementary and McGuire Elementary – with a reading tour.
Eastern Michigan: Eastern Michigan student-athletes posted positive messages across campus with sidewalk chalk and signed a pledge to end bullying on campus. They also provided ‘Donuts for Diversity’ with toothpicks stating ‘Diversity Week EMU Athletics’.
Kent State: Kent State student-athletes attended Willyard Elementary and spoke to students regarding anti-bullying. Throughout the week student-athletes will also post messages regarding anti-bullying.
Miami: Miami student-athletes will post a banner to ‘Swoop Out Bullying’, along with sidewalk chalk written anti-bullying messages outside Millett Hall. In addition, student-athletes will attend Kramer Elementary School and read to children and public service announcements and videos will be shared at home athletic events all week.
Northern Illinois: Huskie student-athletes read to second graders at Tyler Elementary School to spread the message on anti-bullying. NIU is also hosting a cookout with student groups on campus to raise awareness and will pass out orange wristbands.
Ohio: Ohio Bobcat student-athletes attended Morrison-Gordon Elementary Schools and spoke to first and second graders on the importance of standing up to bullying.
Toledo: Toledo student-athletes posted social media messages in taking a stand against anti-bullying, created posters outside locker rooms and training rooms to stand up against bullying and visited local elementary schools to read to children about anti-bullying.
Western Michigan: Bronco student-athletes are wearing orange wristbands that say ‘Push Back Bullying,’ taking to social media to share individual SAAC members’ stances on bullying and raising money for mental health and anti-bullying programs.
