MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Appalachian State University field hockey used three goals in the second period to blow past Central Michigan 5-2 on Friday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (8-3, 1-2 MAC) clinched their first MAC triumph of the season with Friday's three-goal victory. Appalachian's eighth victory of the season also ties head coach Meghan Dawson's best win total as App State's head coach.
After junior Chloe Bell gave App State an early 1-0 lead, Central Michigan (2-9, 0-3 MAC) leveled the game at 1-1 midway through the first quarter. Appalachian then dominated the contest's second period, featuring a goal from junior Meghan Smart and a pair of goals from senior Ali Williams. The senior's two-goal performance made her the ninth Mountaineer to record a goal this season.
App State then extended its lead late in the third period when sophomore Friederike Stegen registered her second goal of 2019. Alice O'Hagan tallied her second goal of the day for the Chippewas in the 52nd minute to trim the deficit to the contest's final score.
App State's offense illustrated efficiency throughout the game, recording five scores on 14 shots. The Mountaineers outshot CMU 14-9 and held an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Smart paced Appalachian with five shots and two assists. The junior also tied Williams with a game-high three shots on target. Smart's goal and pair of assists helped her notch her third four-point performance of the season.
Junior Veerle Van Heertum and senior Michelle Taylor also recorded assists in Friday's scoring outburst.
Freshman goalkeeper Addie Clark closed out the final 10 minutes in the goal cage, marking the second appearance of her career.
The Mountaineers close out their road swing against No. 9 Michigan (6-3) on Saturday at 2 p.m. Saturday's matchup is the first between the two schools.

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Kent State field hockey team (6-5, 2-0) notched its second-straight conference win of the season downing Ball State (3-8, 1-2), 1-0, on Friday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.
One goal is all the Flashes needed to give the Cardinals its first home loss of the season. Freshman Claudia Ortiz found the back of the net for the fourth time this year in the first minute of the game on an assist from Clara Rodriguez Seto.
Kent State controlled possession and outshot Ball State, 16-8. The defense only allowed six Cardinal shots on target and junior goalkeeper Azure Fernsler (5-4) made six saves. Fernsler recorded her third shutout of the year.
The Flashes placed 10 of their 16 shots on goal and earned eight penalty corners. Senior Laila Richter paced Kent State with five shots.
Kent State returns to action Sunday, Oct. 6 as the Flashes close out their road trip with Indiana at noon in Bloomington, Ind.
